This week we cleaned up and finished removing a broken limb from a Deodar Cedar at Chico Cematary. We have been getting a lot of calls about limb failures lately, and that is no surprise. ‘Tis the season for Summer Limb Drop syndrome, where seemingly healthy branches on large mature tress suddenly snap and drop without warning.
Typically, the season lasts from late spring through late summer, especially on hot windless days and breakage occurs midway down long horizontal branches.
It is though this phenomenon is due to decreased transpiration, causing buildup of moisture and weight causing the breakage and long periods of high heat and dryness causing the internal structure of the tree to crack and shrink.
Three steps you can take to reduce the chances of this occurring, causing injury to people, or damage to property:
1. Avoid placing structures or seating under high risk limbs and warn people of the potential danger.
2. Water your trees deeply and/or mulch around the tree, which helps to both insulate and regulate moisture.
3. Hire a certified arborist to inspect and prune for weight reduction and prevent humidity buildup within the canopy.
