Obituary of Ethan Alfred Joe Mc Coy
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of ten year old Ethan McCoy. Ethan Alfred-Joe McCoy died on Thursday, October 22, 2020, after a grueling 61 day battle with pediatric brain cancer. Ethan was born on February 17, 2010 to parents Joey and Stefanie McCoy of Butte Valley, California. Ethan loved gardening, reading, and the great outdoors. He was

a young entrepreneur who loved to make birdhouses with his grandfather and grow succulents. He was a proud member of the Million Word Reading Club at his elementary school and participated in his local swim team, 4H club, and Awana group. Ethan also enjoyed camping in state parks, finding agates at Patrick’s Point, and fishing at his family’s cabin. As a child on the Autism Spectrum, Ethan approached life in a very unique way. Despite social challenges, Ethan connected with people and developed meaningful relationships throughout his community and beyond. His endearing personality, infectious smile, and quirky nature are remembered by all who knew him. Ethan is survived by his parents, Joey and Stefanie McCoy and siblings Holly (9), Judah (5), and Marty (2), as well as his maternal grandparents Esther and Steven Abshier, and paternal grandparents Joe and Susie McCoy. He was deeply loved by his aunts, uncles, cousins, and family friends. Ethan’s family intends to hold a memorial service in February 2021. All are welcome to attend, and more information will be shared as details are arranged. Ethan’s family also plans to establish a memorial scholarship. The McCoy family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, support, and encouragement from their church, school, friends, and community. A special thank you to UC Davis Children’s Hospital and its amazing medical staff. Ethan’s medical journey is documented through his parents’ video diary on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_5CM9Gg1zoSx0GS_eoY6HXNsDCUWHjpI

It is our pleasure to honor a graduating senior who has excelled academically and through an internship at Enloe’s Radiology Department, found his calling to become a nurse. He wrote that that Radiology nurses weren’t just assisting in procedures, but they were comforting patients as well as advocating for them. He realized how deeply nursing combines the science of the body with the feelings of heart and service.

Las Plumas High School
$1000 Scholarship Winner

“I’m applying to this nursing scholarship because I know that it’ll be tough to get through
nursing school without some help. Between the cost of classes, supplies, and just trying to live
day-to-day, I know it’ll pile up fast. I want to give myself the best shot at focusing on school and
becoming the kind of nurse that I wish more people had.

I know I won’t be the one giving the diagnosis or writing the treatment plan, but nurses are the ones who are in the room, at the bedside, hour after hour. The ones who answer the calls, check the vitals, explain the confusing medical stuff, and just sit with people when they’re scared. That’s what I am wanting to do.”

Kylee Corrie, Las Plumas High School

“I decided to apply for the Ethan McCoy Memorial Scholarship because I feel a connection to Ethan’s family. Cancer runs in my family and I have lost various family members
to the battle of cancer. I also have a brother that is on the Autism Spectrum that is the same age
that Ethan was when he passed. Cases like Ethan’s have driven me to pursue a career in
pediatric nursing.”

🎗️ 🏊‍♂️ Durham Dolphin Swim Team 🏊🎗️
Dolphins! We are STILL GOING GOLD for Ethan McCoy! The last three years at our invitational we have been going gold for our beloved swimmer Ethan McCoy. Ethan was a Durham Dolphin who sadly passed away from pediatric brain cancer in 2020 at ten years old. His family set up a Memorial Scholarship in his honor. The scholarship is awarded to local high school seniors who plan to pursue a career in nursing.

At our invitational this year we drew a raffle winner, but because we did not reach our sales goal, and the raffle winner wanted to reach a higher goal in order to donate to Ethan's Memorial scholarship, we were told to keep it going! So far we have sold 51 necklaces, but the previous three years we have sold out at 200, enabling us to donate $1,500 to Ethan's scholarship, and the winner getting to take home $500. We know times are tough, but we are really hoping to sell 100 necklaces (or sell out!) and we hope you can help up reach our goal! Did you know the Durham Dolphins are one of the top contributors to the Ethan McCoy Memorial Scholarship?! Here are the details!

The dolphins are selling gold medal necklaces numbered 1-200. They are $10 each and will be for sale for the rest of the season. We will draw a winner at NVALS. If you have previously bought a necklace this year, you are still entered! (and you can always buy more!)

Since this scholarship is near and dear to our hearts, this is a 25/75 scholarship. If we sell all 200 necklaces the winner will win $500, and the Dolphins will donate the remaining $1,500 to Ethan's scholarship.

Thank you Dolphins! Please enjoy a few pics of our angel pod member Ethan McCoy...

We are honored to award a well-deserving PV student with a scholarship towards her nursing education. In her scholarship application this student wrote the following, “I believe my calling is to work in nursing so that I can directly impact patients and encourage them in what could be the darkest time of their life. I feel like I am fit for a career in nursing because I am dedicated, care deeply about meeting people where they are at, and love learning about health and science.

Our scholarship committee is impressed with this student’s academic success, the elegance of her writing, how she has overcome challenges in her own life and her sincere desire to become a nurse. For all these many reasons, I am honored to award a $1000 Ethan McCoy Memorial Scholarship to Taylee Wright.
