🌳 Before you remove a healthy tree, get a second opinion from an ISA Certified Arborist.

A new client contacted me after being told their Sweetgum was unhealthy, rotten inside, and needed to be removed.

After evaluating it, I found no evidence to support those claims. The tree is healthy, has added over a foot of growth this season, and only needs light pruning over the roof.

This beautiful tree also provides valuable shade, helping keep the home cooler in the summer.

Why spend thousands removing a tree that doesn’t need to come down?

🌳 Not all tree opinions are created equal.

I recently completed a Level 1 Tree Risk Assessment on this mature Pin Oak after another company recommended removal and even identified it as a Red Oak.

It wasn’t.

Correct tree identification is one of the fundamentals of arboriculture. If a tree can’t be properly identified, it’s worth asking how reliable the recommendations are.

My assessment found a sound trunk and root flare, a natural lean away from the home, and no conditions that warrant removal. The biggest issue was years of improper over pruning, and lion’s tail pruning, not the tree itself.

Ultimately, the decision to keep or remove a tree belongs to the property owner. My role is to provide an unbiased assessment based on industry standards and science so you can make an informed decision.

🌳 A Properly Pruned Tree Should Still Look Like a Tree! 🌳

This is what proper structural pruning looks like.

Notice how the canopy is still full through the middle, with evenly spaced branches and healthy foliage from the interior to the outer edges. That’s exactly what you want to see.

One of the most common pruning mistakes is lion’s tailing. Removing all the interior branches and leaves, leaving foliage only at the ends of the limbs.

🚫 Why lion’s tailing is harmful:
• Increases the risk of branch failure during storms.
• Causes excessive sun exposure, leading to bark damage.
• Reduces the tree’s ability to produce energy efficiently.
• Encourages weak, fast-growing sprouts that require more maintenance.

Remember: If a tree looks like it has pom-poms at the ends of bare branches, it has likely been over-pruned.
