Hello friends of Kul Kah Han Native Plant Garden, new and old!

The region's enthusiasm about native plants was on display at the Garden last Saturday for our final featured speaker in the 2025 speaker series, Joe Holtrop! At least 39 folks spent some time on the lovely, sunny fall-ish day to hear Joe talk about landscaping with natives. He introduced a few concepts in the Salmon Shelter then led the group around the garden, giving specific advice about mostly trees and shrubs (flowers are a whole other topic!). He shared his experience with evergreen huckleberry (an under-rated shrub), thimbleberry, low oregon grape (has lots of natural pectin!), salal (hard to transplant due to growth via rhizome), vine maple (a real staple), cascara (latter is another underutilized tree), red flowering currant (white to red blossoms, the more sun the more blossoms) and so much more!!

If you are interested in learning much more, there are several openings in Joe's next class that he teaches through the Jefferson County Conservation District. You can get more information by following the link below, and there is a button on that page to register for the class.

We are so grateful to Joe, Kris Ethington, and Forest Shomer, our 2025 speakers, for sharing their knowledge, experience and love for our region's native plants! Stay tuned next winter/spring for announcements about our 2026 speaker series!

Meanwhile, we hope to see you again in the garden, either wandering through enjoying it, at our work parties, and/or of course at our annual fall plant sale!
