🌿 Hands-On Bonsai Styling Workshop with Jason Chan with the Southern Breeze Tree and Stone Society

Join us on Saturday, June 13th for an interactive bonsai styling workshop at the Huntington Library! Rather than a traditional demonstration, this session is designed to be collaborative and hands-on. Jason Chan will bring a variety of bonsai material, and participants will work together in small groups to analyze, discuss, and style trees as a team.

We'll explore:
- Design aesthetics and bonsai principles
- How to evaluate and approach raw material
- Styling techniques and decision-making processes
- Different species, sizes, and design possibilities

Each group will have the opportunity to discuss ideas, develop a vision for their tree, and put those concepts into practice. Whether you're new to bonsai or have years of experience, this workshop is a great chance to learn by doing and see how others approach the same material.

Summer heat brings more than growth — it also brings pests. 🌿☀️
Spider mites, aphids, and scale can quickly stress a bonsai tree if left unchecked during the warmer months.

Beginner-friendly summer pest control techniques for bonsai.

• Preventative care and healthy watering habits
• isolate / quarantine affected trees, branch removal
• Chemical treatment

Healthy bonsai start with observation and consistency. Learning how to protect your trees during summer is one of the most important skills for long-term success.

Color discoloration -Check your trees for discoloration such grey foliage or possible yellowing on certain branches. Sprays can help kill pests.

Branch stress - Pest can steal energy and nutrients from your branches. If you see struggling branches, take a look inside to see if you have pests attaching themselves to the stems. Sprays or removing struggling branches can help spread and also focus the tree's efforts toward recovery.

Pro Tip: When spraying, make sure to spray again 7 days later to break any pest egg cycles. Note that sprays can burn the foliage if left in the sun, so make sure to treat at night or in the shade.

Quick Bonsai Wiring Tip:

In bonsai, the wire should guide the branch firmly — not struggle against it. If the wire bends first, it’s a sign to move up a size. If the wire moves the branch, the wire is thick enough to bend it, if the branch bends the wire, move up a size.

What started as a simple beginner-friendly guide has now helped introduce thousands of people to bonsai around the world. It’s honestly been incredible seeing how many people have used this little book as their starting point into bonsai over the years. Spring Eastern Leaf Garden Update 🌿
Benches are FULL.

We’ve been busy refreshing the specialty tree garden at Eastern Leaf with over 100+ unique bonsai and specimen trees now available for viewing in-store. This spring brought in a large wave of new arrivals — from refined classics to harder-to-find collector material — and many are appearing in the garden before they even make it onto the online store.

If you haven’t visited recently, the garden is looking completely different right now.

This area is designed to be more than just shopping — it’s a place to slow down, explore, learn, and experience the character of mature bonsai and specialty trees in person. Every bench has something new to discover.

Many of these trees are one-of-a-kind and will slowly be added online over the coming weeks, but the best selection is currently available to see at the nursery. Come walk the garden this spring 🌱
