The Wisconsin DNR, in conjunction with the National Weather Service, has issued a Red Flag Warning for today, Wednesday, April 22, 2026 from 2 to 8 p.m. for Burnett and Washburn counties in northwest Wisconsin.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when a variety of weather factors come together to create especially dangerous wildland fire conditions. Hot temperatures, very low humidity, gusty winds and exceptionally dry fuels from lack of precipitation in the region are anticipated and can result in catastrophic fires.

The counties surrounding Burnett and Washburn are still in near-critical fire danger, and the public should avoid all burning across the region until conditions improve.

The DNR will prohibit burning with all DNR-issued burn permits where the DNR has burn restriction authority in areas with elevated fire danger. The DNR is asking the public to be especially careful with any activities that could potentially lead to a wildland fire and check any fires from recent days to make sure they have been properly extinguished.

Severe conditions continue across much of the state, and the threat of a large wildfire remains extremely high in Wisconsin. Elevated fire conditions are expected to persist through tomorrow until rain falls. The DNR is at full staffing and preparedness across the state to respond to any incidents.

The Barron County Snowmobile Trails will open on Thursday, January 1st, 2026 at 8:00AM. Please use caution as ice conditions vary throughout the County and some lakes may not be marked. Although our local Snowmobile Club Volunteers are out working tirelessly to groom trails and clear downed trees, trail conditions can change at any time. Please respect our landowners and do not ride on trails until they are officially open. Trail maps are available locally at various establishments including convenience stores and taverns.

Attention ATV/UTV riders! Expect increased patrols this holiday weekend.

Heading out for one last ride of the summer? Law enforcement will be out on Wisconsin's trails and routes from Aug. 29-31 as part of the statewide "Think Smart Before You Start" campaign.

DNR wardens and county deputies will focus on safety, watching for individuals driving while intoxicated, speeding and operating recklessly. Let's do our part to ride responsibly and keep our trails safe for everyone.

When riding an ATV or UTV, always remember to plan ahead, stay sober, ride smart and wear your helmet (and seatbelt on a UTV!)

We need your help collecting red and white pine cones for our reforestation program!

Early September is the prime time to collect mature red and white pine cones, when the color has just turned brown, but the scales have not yet opened to release the seeds.

The state nurseries pay $125 per bushel of red pine cones and $70 per bushel of white pine cones. A bushel is equivalent to about two 5-gallon buckets, and experienced collectors can pick a bushel of red pine cones in about 2-3 hours when the cone crop is good. White pine cones are larger, so picking a bushel usually takes about an hour.

Before collecting cones, contact one of the state nurseries to ensure purchasing is still open. Visit our website to find contact info for the state nurseries and more details on how to collect pine cones: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/newsroom/release/113341

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: School buses will be active around the state next week. Here’s a reminder on what the different colored lights on a school bus indicate and what you should do if they’re flashing:

🟠 Amber Warning Lights: The school bus is about to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop.

🔴Red Warning Lights: Stop at least 20 feet from the bus whether approaching from either direction. The only exception is if you are traveling on the other side of a divided road that’s separated by a median or other physical barrier.
