Five Specks Homestead

Five Specks Homestead * 2 Air Force vets + 3 younglings (all grown) = 5 Specks

Our goal for the past 18 years has been to become self-sufficient.

Well, we are finally in the right place at the right time to start manifesting this dream.

Sometimes life on our wee homestead is all cuddles and brushings.

Other times the goatses are ar****le and break through into the neighbor's. Needless to say, that section got fixed before anyth8ng else this morning. πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎπŸ

The willow marsh habitat was cleaned up a bit today. The area in the green circle was full of large limbs and bits broke off by the ice storm a year and a half ago. We didn't want to remove it all since, you know, beautiful marsh habitat with all sorts of lovelies. Bear manned the chainsaw while the Sead operated on the chopper. My wee garden is is being mulched with woods from our land.

Why didn't anyone tell me that we are already half way through May? The larger garden is still overrun with weeds, so the boys cleaned out what is supposed to be the herb garden.

We have Orange Roma, two slicers, sweet 100, yellow pear tomatoes...cool jalapeΓ±os, sweet nanner, spicy nanner, cayenne pepper....sweet taters...baking taters...corn (what's the worst that will happen πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ) I am going to throw out carrot seeds later.

We've started in the herb garden with a wee bit if help from our friends, Side Chicks 2.0. They are loving being out in the yard exploring and finding the nummers I'm digging up.

It looks like summer is upon us after a week-ish of rain. The pond is almost full and the ground is hella saturated. Perfect time to plant the climber garden which will consist of cucumbers (picking and lemon), squashes, pumpkins, watermelons, honeydew, cantaloupe, peas, luffa, and others I have forgotten. I will also take advantage of the soggy soul to rip weedsvout of my herb garden plot. WOO HOO

I'll even be a good girl and wear my mucking Birk sandals and not my out in public birks.

We have been adopted by two Canadian geese. They will honk at us along with the critters for their snacks in the morning and evening. Neither of them have shown any aggression towards us or the animals. Which is a good thing. Geese attacked our corgi-ish 9 years ago and I've been uneasy ever since.

The wee greenhouse is starting to fill with green thing. It is coming up on planting time. I am so excited for my raised climber beds. We will have luffa, 3 types of pumpkin, cucumbers, lemon chukes, squashes, and beans. I'm pretty sure sweet taters are climbers also. If so, they will go in there also. There are about 14 herb babies in there also.

The last three pictures are ones I had out in the porch this winter. We have indigo, what I hope is passion flower, and a soapberry seedling. I liberated the soapberry seeds from a tree on base while grocery shopping. Sssshhhh, don't tell. πŸ˜‚

It definitely is spring down here. My days have been full of mowing, chemical free sand burr removal, farm animals, relocating yard debris for shredding in the garden, my wee greenhouse, planning the herb garden, prepping the raised beds around the house, and...and...and. I absolutely love these never ending projects.

We are down to two sweet, sweet piggies now. Porky and Miss Piggy became too much after Bear's RA diagnosis. They and their babies are now on a new farm.

Everyone in the Back 40 are so much calmer. Sweet Patunia is spreading her wings and adventures out more and is loving all of the uninterrupted rubs. Chip is recovering nicely from a case of the mange.

Something is going on every day here, but it is hard to take photos when I'm by myself. Maybe I should invest in a selfie-stick?

In the meantime, here is the wee compost area by the garden (so much to be done in there, but I'm still waiting on seeds to pop, Chip got a scrub down (he was blessed with mites and he deserves a good skin conditioning as it heals), a toad is lending his vibes to me wee greenhouse, and a tree frog was chill'n in the hydrangeas.
