The biggest mistakes in retaining wall construction happen BEFORE the first block is ever laid. 🚧

When you’re building a large retaining wall, what happens behind the wall is just as important as what you see in front of it.

One of the biggest mistakes contractors make is not excavating far enough back to properly reinforce the wall. And the scary part? Once the project is finished, you’ll never know what shortcuts were taken underground.

In this video, I’m showing you exactly how much excavation goes into building a large retaining wall the RIGHT way.

This particular wall will support an entire luxury outdoor living space, complete with a high-end paver patio, seating walls, pillars, and a fire pit.

That’s a tremendous amount of weight and responsibility resting on one structure.

💸 What’s the MOST money I’ve ever lost on a project?

If you’re a contractor long enough, eventually you’re going to lose money on a job. It’s part of running a business.

But I believe there are 4 types of contractors when that happens:

1️⃣ The one who walks off the job and leaves the customer hanging.

2️⃣ The one who starts cutting corners to save money.

3️⃣ The one who tries to force change orders on the customer to make up for their own mistakes.

4️⃣ The one who takes the loss, finishes the job properly, and honors their word.

I’ve always believed that if I give someone a price, that’s my responsibility to stand behind. If I underestimated the job, that’s on me, not the customer.

Sometimes doing the right thing costs you money. But your reputation, integrity, and the trust you build with customers are worth far more in the long run.

Five retaining walls. One complete front yard transformation. 🧱

We wrapped up this project in Northern Kentucky, where the homeowner wanted to completely clean up the front of the property while also solving some functional issues.

We installed five retaining walls, completed new concrete sidewalk work, added landscaping, corrected the grading, and installed multiple drainage solutions to properly manage water throughout the property.

The goal wasn’t just to make it look better—it was to make the entire front yard function better, too.

Big transformation, happy customer, and another one knocked out by the crew. 💪🧱

How to Build Retaining Walls With VERY Aggressive Curves 🧱

Aggressive curves make retaining walls a completely different animal.

In this video, we break down how we build tight curves the right way—from strategically laying out each course and cutting individual blocks to get the proper fit, to making sure the geogrid placement is exactly where it needs to be.

The tighter the curve, the less room there is for error. Small mistakes at the bottom can turn into major problems as the wall gets taller, so every course has to be planned ahead.

There’s a lot more that goes into a curved retaining wall than just stacking blocks. Check out the video to see how we do it. 🧱💪

Another hillside secured and ready for what’s next. 💪

We built this retaining wall system to hold back and stabilize the hillside, creating the space needed for the homeowner’s future pole barn / man cave garage.

A project like this isn’t just about stacking block—it’s about building the structure underneath everything that comes next. Proper excavation, drainage, stone backfill, compaction, and a solid base all come together to create a wall that’s built to last.
