And all you can think is:

“I should’ve filled up yesterday.”

Home improvement can feel the exact same way.

If you’ve been thinking about replacing your windows or doors, waiting doesn’t usually make the project cheaper. Material costs change. Labor costs change. And that window or door that’s already giving you problems probably isn’t going to fix itself.

I’ve talked with plenty of homeowners who wish they would’ve done the project when they first started thinking about it.

🍂 BEFORE YOU BLAME THE TREES… LOOK UP.

Fall is getting closer, which means pretty soon your driveway and yard will be covered with leaves.
But if you notice little black, gray, or sand-like granules collecting near your downspouts, those probably didn’t come from a tree.

They can come from your asphalt shingles.

Now, finding some granules doesn’t automatically mean your roof needs replaced. Asphalt shingles naturally lose some granules over time, and newer roofs can also shed some loose material.

What matters is how much you’re seeing and whether it seems to be increasing.

So here’s this week’s Jim’s Home Front challenge:
Next time you walk outside, take 10 seconds and check the ground underneath one of your downspouts.

🚪 THE FRONT DOOR GROCERY TEST

You know the move.

Two grocery bags on one arm.
A case of water in the other.
Keys somehow buried in the wrong pocket.

And suddenly the front door you use every single day becomes an obstacle course. 😂

But here’s a little homeowner thought for today:

When was the last time you actually paid attention to how your front door operates?

A good entry door shouldn’t require a shoulder bump, hip check, hard pull, or “hang on kids, Dad’s fighting the door again.”

If yours sticks, drags, rattles, feels drafty around the edges, or requires a little “special technique” that everyone in the family has learned… that’s worth noticing.

Sometimes we get so accustomed to little problems around the house that we stop realizing they’re problems.

🪨 “I JUST WANT TO CHANGE ONE LITTLE THING…”

Famous last words of a homeowner. 😂

You walk outside, look at the front of the house and think…

"It looks fine. It just needs a little something."

Then somebody shows you what a little Versetta Stone around the entry or garage could look like.

🌧️ THE MOST UNDERRATED PART OF YOUR HOME?

Your gutters probably don't get much attention—until they stop doing their job.

A properly working gutter system has one very important mission:

Get water AWAY from your home.

During a heavy Cincinnati downpour, hundreds of gallons of water can run off a roof. Your gutters collect that water and your downspouts direct it away from the areas where you don't want it.

When that system isn't working properly, you may start noticing:

🏡 Water collecting near the foundation
🟢 Algae or staining on the siding
🌿 Mulch and landscaping washing away
💧 Water spilling over entrances and walkways

That's why something as simple as checking your gutters occasionally can make a big difference.

✅ FACT: Vinyl siding is low maintenance, but your exterior still deserves a quick inspection from time to time.

Take a walk around the house and look for loose or damaged panels, areas where landscaping is rubbing against the siding, buildup that needs cleaning, and places around windows, doors, or penetrations where something just doesn’t look right.

Walk around ONE side of your house and really look at the siding. You might be surprised how many little things you never notice from the driveway.
