🚨 Public Service Announcement from Serene Aqua 🚨

Over the years, the name Serene Aqua has become known throughout the community — and we’re incredibly proud of that. What began as a specialty in ponds and waterfalls has grown into a full-scale outdoor living company, building everything from patios and pergolas to fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, and retaining walls.

But along the way, we’ve realized something important:
The name Serene Aqua has sometimes caused confusion — with some people thinking we only do water features.

To clear that up and better represent who we are today, we’re beginning a slow and thoughtful transition to our new name:

🎨 Serene Outdoor Artisans 🎨

This name reflects the craftsmanship, creativity, and complete outdoor experiences we bring to each project — whether it includes water or not.

🔸 Same trusted team
🔸 Same quality work
🔸 Same passion for transforming spaces
🔸 Just a name that reflects everything we do.

We’ll be using both names for a while during this transition, so you’ll still see Serene Aqua on trucks, emails, and online — but soon, you’ll notice Serene Outdoor Artisans taking the lead.

Thank you for supporting us for over 15 years — and we can’t wait to show you what’s next.

I have been waiting for this house to hit the market before I made this post. This was more than a landscape job — it was a creative structural solution. Serene Aqua was brought in by an investor who couldn’t acquire the neighboring lot, but still needed off-street parking for future buyers. We excavated over 300 tons of soil, underpinned the original foundation, rerouted utilities, and carved out space beneath the home to create secure garage access — all in the heart of winter. With access tight and the slope unforgiving, every inch of this design had to serve a purpose.
We used Allan Block retaining walls to frame the new driveway and installed all new concrete flatwork including sidewalks, driveway, and entry walkways. Final touches included SiteOne plantings for a clean, low-maintenance finish. This project reflects what Serene Aqua does best — combining 30 years of structural and site development experience with a design-forward mindset to create solutions that elevate property value and functionality. We’re not just a landscape company — we’re problem solvers with a builder’s mindset.

🌸 Spring is Teasing… But Winter Isn’t Done Yet! 🌸
Zone 6b | Late March Tips from Serene Aqua

As we creep toward the end of March here in Zone 6, nature is beginning to stir. You’ve probably noticed the early buds on your magnolias, hydrangeas, and flowering trees getting ready to put on a show.

But hold on—don’t let your excitement get ahead of the forecast! 🌡️ Late March can still throw us a curveball with a hard freeze or even a surprise snow.

👉 Why it matters:
Those tender flower buds that started to pop after a warm spell are vulnerable to freezing temps. A hard frost (under 28°F for a few hours) can damage or kill the buds, leaving you with a lackluster bloom season.

✅ Here’s what you can do:

Cover early bloomers with breathable material like burlap, bed sheets, or frost cloth (avoid plastic).
Use stakes to tent the cover so it doesn’t crush the buds.
Remove coverings by mid-morning once temps rise.
For smaller shrubs, even a flipped-over trash can or large bucket works in a pinch.

Your garden has waited all winter to show off—give it a little protection now, and you’ll enjoy a full, colorful payoff in just a few weeks. 🌷🌼🌳

🌿 At Serene Aqua, we live for moments like these—when nature’s about to explode into color. Follow us for seasonal tips, design inspiration, and ideas to make your outdoor space truly serene.

Having a patio is a great way to enhance your outdoor living space and add value to your home. 🎉
✨Here are three reasons why a patio can increase your home value:
Increased Living Space: A patio provides an additional outdoor living space for you and your family to enjoy. It's a great spot to host outdoor gatherings, barbecues, and dinner parties. By increasing the functional living space of your home, you can increase its value.
Curb Appeal: A well-designed and maintained patio can add curb appeal to your home. It makes your home look more inviting and creates an attractive outdoor space that can be enjoyed by everyone. A beautiful patio can be a major selling point for potential buyers.
Return on Investment: Adding a patio is a relatively low-cost home improvement project that can have a high return on investment. 🤩 According to the National Association of Realtors, a patio can recover up to 102% of its cost when you sell your home. This means that not only will you enjoy the benefits of a patio while you live in your home, but you can also recoup most of the cost when you sell your home. @ Julia Wesselkamper wrote this and is one of the area's top Realtors!!!

RETAINING WALLS:
In the heartland of the United States lies the Midwest, a region characterized by its vast plains, rolling hills, and fertile farmland. However, beneath the surface beauty lies a unique challenge: soil retention. With its unpredictable weather patterns, expansive soil types, and undulating landscapes, the Midwest presents homeowners, landscapers, and engineers with the formidable task of preserving soil integrity and preventing erosion. In this landscape of opportunity and challenge, modular retaining wall blocks emerge as a must-have solution, offering unparalleled strength, versatility, and aesthetic appeal.

The Midwest Soil Conundrum: A Battle Against Erosion

The Midwest boasts a diverse array of soil types, from rich loam to heavy clay, each with its own set of challenges. Factor in the region's notorious weather extremes, including heavy rains, freeze-thaw cycles, and occasional floods, and the need for robust soil retention measures becomes evident. Soil erosion, if left unchecked, can lead to a host of problems, including loss of arable land, property damage, and environmental degradation.

Enter Modular Retaining Wall Blocks: A Fortress Against Nature's Forces

Modular retaining wall blocks stand as stalwart guardians against the erosive forces of nature, offering a multifaceted solution to soil retention challenges in the Midwest. Here's why they're a must-have:

Unmatched Strength and Stability: Crafted from durable materials such as concrete or engineered stone, modular retaining wall blocks provide a solid barrier against soil movement. Their interlocking design creates a stable structure capable of withstanding the pressures exerted by shifting soil and water runoff.

Versatility in Design and Function: Whether used to create terraced gardens, define landscape boundaries, or shore up embankments, modular retaining wall blocks offer unparalleled versatility. Available in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, they can be customized to complement any aesthetic vision while meeting the unique requirements of Midwest landscapes.

Ease of Installation: Modular retaining wall blocks are designed for ease of installation, making them accessible to both DIY enthusiasts and professional landscapers alike. With their interlocking mechanisms and straightforward assembly instructions, they offer a hassle-free solution for soil retention projects of any scale.

Durability in the Face of Weather Extremes: From scorching summer heat to bitter winter cold, Midwest weather can be unforgiving. Modular retaining wall blocks, engineered to withstand temperature fluctuations and environmental stressors, offer long-lasting durability that stands the test of time.

Environmental Benefits: In addition to their practical utility, modular retaining wall blocks offer environmental benefits, including soil stabilization, stormwater management, and habitat creation. By preventing soil erosion and promoting healthy landscaping practices, they contribute to the preservation of Midwest ecosystems.

Unlocking the Potential of Midwest Landscapes

In the Midwest, where the battle against soil erosion rages on, modular retaining wall blocks emerge as indispensable allies in the quest for landscape preservation and enhancement. With their formidable strength, versatility, and aesthetic appeal, they empower homeowners, landscapers, and engineers to unlock the full potential of the Midwest's diverse terrain. From rolling hillsides to suburban backyards, modular retaining wall blocks stand as guardians of soil integrity, ensuring that the heartland's natural beauty endures for generations to come.

The Battle of Surfaces: Why Pavers Reign Supreme Over Stamped Concrete

In the realm of outdoor flooring options, two contenders stand tall: stamped concrete and pavers. Both promise durability and aesthetic appeal, but when it comes to long-term performance and versatility, pavers emerge as the undisputed champion. Let's delve into the battle of surfaces and uncover why pavers reign supreme over stamped concrete.

1. The Cracking Conundrum:
Stamped concrete, while initially appealing with its uniform finish, is susceptible to cracking over time. As weather fluctuations and ground movements take their toll, concrete slabs can develop unsightly cracks, compromising both functionality and visual appeal. On the other hand, pavers offer a flexible solution to this dilemma. With each unit laid individually, pavers can accommodate ground movements without succumbing to cracks. Their interlocking design distributes weight evenly, reducing the risk of cracking and ensuring long-lasting beauty.

2. Versatility in Design:
One of the standout features of pavers is their versatility in design. Available in a myriad of shapes, colors, and textures, pavers allow for endless creativity in outdoor landscaping. Whether you're aiming for a rustic cobblestone look or a sleek modern aesthetic, there's a paver style to suit every taste. In contrast, stamped concrete offers limited design options, often mimicking natural materials like stone or brick. However, the replication falls short in authenticity and can appear artificial over time.

3. Ease of Repair:
In the unfortunate event of damage, repairing stamped concrete can be a cumbersome task. Matching the color and texture of the existing surface poses a challenge, often resulting in noticeable patches. Conversely, pavers offer a straightforward solution to repairs. Individual units can be easily removed and replaced, ensuring seamless integration with the surrounding pavement. Whether it's fixing a cracked paver or addressing underground utility repairs, the modular nature of pavers simplifies maintenance and reduces costs in the long run.

4. Enhanced Durability:
When it comes to durability, pavers have the edge over stamped concrete. Made from high-quality materials such as concrete, clay, or natural stone, pavers exhibit exceptional strength and resilience. Their interlocking design distributes heavy loads evenly, preventing individual units from shifting or cracking under pressure. Additionally, pavers are less prone to surface wear and tear, maintaining their appearance and structural integrity for years to come.

5. Environmental Friendliness:
In an era of environmental consciousness, pavers offer a sustainable choice for outdoor surfacing. Unlike poured concrete, which requires large amounts of energy and resources during installation, pavers are manufactured with eco-friendly practices in mind. Additionally, their permeable design allows rainwater to infiltrate the ground, reducing stormwater runoff and promoting groundwater recharge. With pavers, you can enjoy a beautiful outdoor space while minimizing your environmental footprint.

In conclusion, while stamped concrete may offer initial allure, the superior qualities of pavers make them the preferred choice for outdoor flooring. From their resistance to cracking and ease of repair to their versatility in design and eco-friendly attributes, pavers stand as a testament to durability, aesthetics, and practicality. So, the next time you embark on an outdoor landscaping project, remember: when it comes to paving the way, choose pavers for a surface that's built to last.

What a wonderful bit of information for my Gardener friends. You may have heard of planting tomatoes on their side. It may sound like a weird thing to do, but here's why it works so well.
Tomato stems are full of parenchyma cells. These non-descript cells are located just below the epidermal layer. One of the coolest things parenchyma cells do is turn into roots, known as adventitious roots
By burying the plant sideways or very deeply in your garden, you’re putting more of the stem underground from the start to enable lots of adventitious root growth. This means your tomato plant now has a much more complex root system, making it easier to take up the water and nutrients needed to make bushel after bushel of tomatoes.
To learn more about how why this works and HOW to plant your tomatoes sideways, take a look at our guide here: https://www.ruralsprout.com/sideways-tomatoes/

I did this with honeysuckle(for myself, not because of a symbol of unification). because I don't have the patience to wait 30 years for the tree to get this big haha...Symbolizing the union of two individuals into one, newly married couples would plant Sycamore Trees on either side of the walkway to their home and unite them 💚
