Grant started The Alexander Copper Company while working for his dads construction company where he spent much of his time rebuilding box gutters. Box gutters are built into the house so it is a type of woodworking that requires a commitment to craftsmanship. The fact that it is such difficult work convinced Grant, a former marine, licensed EMT, and Cincinnati State student that he could make a living designing and building copper sheet metal cornices and traditional box gutters. A cornice is generally any horizontal molding that crowns a building so part of the structure that makes up a cornice is often a box gutter. It is a shame that the beautiful work on this Northside home is on the roof where nobody can see it! However, you can go to https://www.alexandercopper.com to see more examples of Grant’s craftsmanship

According to their bios at www.fire-lab.com/who-we-are , James Payne is a sculptor and alchemist, Luis Laya is a Venezuelan trained architect and cuisine guru. Both have strong ideas about how cooking experiences can change people. They met while making molds at Rookwood Pottery where their common interests swirled around fire and the interplay of heat, air and fuel. As their live fire feasts continued to grow, demand for their “badass”, smokeless, high efficiency, wood fired Dragon Grill increased as well. Chefs and local gathering places like Gutierrez Deli in Covington saw that when you light a fire and start a grill, people will gather. James views gatherings as social sculpture and Luis has an unbreakable spirit from having to start over in the U.S. after leaving Venezuela with his family and no money. We suggest you follow their journey .

Susannah Tisue of SKT Ceramics and Michael Miritello of Century Design purchased the former Century Theatre on Gilbert Ave. in Walnut Hills and are currently converting the building into a second floor shop space and a street level showroom for both businesses. Michael is taking a hiatus from his woodworking and furniture making business to do most of the carpentry work, including building a new grand staircase and replacing the showroom windows. This couple relocated to Cincinnati from Brooklyn after renting studio space for several years and growing weary of ever being able to find an affordable building in Brooklyn. It’s exciting to have these NYU trained artists pursuing their passion in Cincinnati! Visit at Findlay Market or at www.sktceramics.com. See Michaels woodworking posts or follow the renovation .

The Standard Covington is the newest bar/restaurant from the family who also brought Frida 602, Otto’s and Larry’s All American Cafe to Covington. Co-owners Emily Wolff and Paul Weckman, a husband and wife team, are passionate about historic preservation and the community building that follows. Wolff uses her Fine Arts and Preservation background to rehab and preserve each project the duo tackles. This couple believes that by investing in some of the worst or forgotten properties, that you are allowing history to speak again, and each building has a story to tell. Restaurant owners are often among the main investors in urban communities and yet have taken the hardest hit from the Covid pandemic...So go check out the outdoor space and summer menu at The Standard or visit them .

Cincinnati natives and food entrepreneurs, Tony and Austin Ferrari took two weeks off from running the Hillside Supper Club in San Francisco every year to travel to coffee shops all over the world. Their passion for “place” led them to eventually hire a friend and architect to put their ideas on paper. Mom ‘n ‘Em Coffee integrates their love of home, Cincinnati and the Camp Washington neighborhood with their talents as makers, chefs and restaurateurs. This coffee and wine shop should be on your list for a cup of custom blended Ferrari Bros. coffee by Deeper Roots or a jar of their homemade garlic ailoi. Of course, say hi to mom Theresa when you visit!

Northern Row Brewery & Distillery is taking “handcrafted” to the next level. Metal Solutions, a company owned by David Berger and one of the owners of Northern Row fabricated the tables, front bar, production walls and many of the other architectural elements in this former Christian Moerlein icehouse building. Much of the material used for these elements was salvaged or repurposed from area buildings. For example, the lights above the bar are from the now demolished Cincinnati Gardens. Owners David and Nancy Berger and Joe and Robin Maas restored this pre-prohibition building for their planned grand opening on St Patrick’s Day which was delayed until recently. Visit the Brewery located in the Northern Row section of OTR at 111 W. McMicken Ave and check out https://msdf1.com

When asked about the Art Climb, Chris Manning of said, “The hillside ecology added a lot of dynamic layers of inspiration to the original idea of the grand staircase and outdoor gallery”. Known for their projects that integrate art and science, this project is arguably the best of their portfolio. The Art Climb is a trail that will ultimately link existing assets in the Mt Adams cultural district, a civic space linking communities and an art experience likely to have a transformative effect on the Cincinnati Art Museum. Walk the precast, concrete Tektura steps during the day and view the neighboring nine story Baldwin Building at eye level, or stroll the Art Climb at night when the lighting is part of the artistic experience. ‪http://www.humannature.cc/profile.html‬
