It saddens us to announce after 19 years as DC Architect’s Design Director and Senior Project Manager, Dana Cartney is retiring. His contributions will always be valued and remembered and we will miss having someone with his wealth of knowledge in our office. He has been an integral part of our company’s project involvement in San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Los Angeles County regions.
Prior to working at DC Architects, Dana started his career in structural engineering and design as a structural draftsman. He worked on projects for Cal Tech and JPL and most notably on the Mauna Kea observatory in Hilo, Hawaii. After some time, he gravitated towards architectural design where his paths crossed with Richard Duncan and he began to work in his studio. And the rest is history!
Looking ahead into his retirement years, Dana is looking forward to the time he can spend with his family and grandchildren, staying in touch with colleagues, golfing, maintenance around his home, and fitting in some traveling. Dana has always been viewed as a mentor in our office. In asking what pieces of advice he can pass along to the next generation of design professionals, he said this: Be inquisitive. Do not lose that ability to be curious and want to learn. Architecture is a field you are always learning and situations arise you haven’t encountered before. You need to experience it and adapt to grow in this industry. Never be afraid to admit you don’t know an answer and ask the questions to learn. Asking the right questions are just as important as finding the answers. Lastly, know your strengths and weaknesses – work with your strengths and work on your weaknesses.
