My dear spouse was suppose to go on a field trip with us yesterday, but as we were about to leave, we spied two donkeys in the woods. He was so stressed because he said, of all days, they would show up when he didn't have time to saddle up a horse to catch them. Well as we drove down the drive, we spied the migrating donkeys next door. That clinched it for Brandon. He grabbed a saddle blanket out of the back of my vehicle (who else thinks that it is weird that I just have one of those lying around in my vehicle?!?!???), and told me that he would join us at the farm after he took care of the donkeys. As Tolbert normal, we were late, so I took off with our youngest.
Upon arriving home, (hours later, and still minus a husband) I found out that Brandon had just had quite a fun time. He saddled up Piper and went about corralling the donkeys into a makeshift round pen he made with rope and the trees down in the woods by our pond. He was so impressed with Piper! He says we definitely have a cow horse. He showed her what he wanted - keeping the donkeys from leaving that area, and once she understood what he wanted, she took to it and all he had to do was sit there.
Long story short (too late!), Brandon and Piper ended up having to drive the donkeys down the road a little ways. There was a light pole, a differing opinion on the course that should be pursued between horse and rider, and someone got thrown (I won't say who). All in all, he got the donkeys home, and found out that the owners had been trying to catch them since Sunday, and just couldn't do it.
Can't believe I married a cowboy, even though he'd never worked with horses until he was influenced by my mom. He absolutely loves it and he's just truly a natural at it.
So, to sum up the day: FB fixed - check, field trip - check, corn maze - check, donkeys in the woods - check, husband galloping down the road herding donkeys - check, and a stinky dog helping amid all the chaos - check. Gotta love our little farm life!
