Guess what happened over the weekend yall!! Gertie & Luis FINALLY had dem babies! Whew. Lumen and I had been timing them and they were Definitely overdue for ‘normal’ standards of goslings. They brought them in the yard the very first day and every day since. Next to all of the 3 other families whose goslings are bonafide teenagers now, these are so teeny and so sweet. They permit us to watch them some and will come near and stay around while I’m gardening and even when Sam’s been using the w**d eater. It really melts my soul with gladness that they feel safe here.
I had to look up what it means in tradition and lore to have this happen and this is what the internets told me and I liked it enough to share it with y’all:
There’s a meaningful distinction between an animal that passes through and one that stays, nests, and raises young on your land. That’s closer to a land ally or place guardian than a fleeting totem encounter or even just because we happen to live in an ideal place for them.
Goose as power animal/totem: geese are one of the primary shamanic symbols of the soul’s journey. Teaching me about reciprocity, shared burden, and showing up for my people from the ways they fly and work in partnership.
In many Indigenous North American traditions, geese are messengers and navigators —they know when to move, when to stay, and how to find their way home. A goose nesting on your land is sometimes seen as a sign of protection, loyalty, and homecoming — geese mate for life and defend their young fiercely. (How sweet! I certainly want our home and my sacred spaces and clients to feel those things)
In Celtic traditions, geese were guardians of the threshold between worlds — their honking was thought to announce spiritual visitors or signal that something sacred was near.(holy cow, we live on a very active portal then! 😱🤣)
In Egyptian mythology, the goose laid the cosmic egg from which the sun was born — so geese are deeply tied to creation and new beginnings. (There’s been a whole lotta that around here, for me personally, my business and groups, the garden & of course my clients)
Kinda fun.
& BABIES ARE JUST SO FUN!!
