🪵 WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WOOD TYPES?
And why does “Janka Hardness” matter in cabinetry and woodworking? 🤔
At D.C.W Cabinetry LLC, we work with a wide variety of domestic and imported hardwoods depending on the style, durability, and look our clients want. One of the biggest factors that separates wood species is something called the Janka Hardness Rating — which measures how resistant a wood is to dents and wear.
Here are some of the most popular wood species used in cabinetry and woodworking:
🇺🇸 DOMESTIC WOODS
• Red Oak – Janka: 1,290
Strong, affordable, and known for its prominent grain pattern.
• White Oak – Janka: 1,360
Very durable with a cleaner grain and excellent moisture resistance.
• Maple – Janka: 1,450
Extremely popular for painted cabinetry because of its smooth grain and hardness.
• Hickory – Janka: 1,820
One of the hardest domestic woods available with incredible character and color variation.
• Cherry – Janka: 950
Softer than many hardwoods but prized for its rich color and elegant appearance.
🌎 IMPORTED WOODS
• Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) – Janka: 2,350
Extremely hard and durable with deep reddish tones.
• Mahogany – Janka: 800–900
Known for its luxurious appearance and exceptional workability.
• Teak – Janka: 1,070
Naturally resistant to moisture and often used in high-end projects.
• Purpleheart – Janka: 2,520
Very dense and famous for its striking purple color.
• Zebrawood – Janka: 1,830
Unique striped grain pattern that makes a bold statement.
💡 So what does this mean for you as a homeowner?
Harder woods generally resist dents and scratches better, while softer woods may offer easier machining, smoother finishes, or richer character. The “best” wood depends on your style, budget, and how the space will be used.
At D.C.W Cabinetry LLC, we help guide you through selecting the right materials for your project so you get cabinetry that not only looks beautiful — but performs beautifully for years to come.
