How to care for winter succulents; and what to do with them while I wait for spring:
• Hardy Succulents – refers to a group of succulents tolerant to both frost and very low temperatures. They thrive best outdoors. You should let them dry out a bit, but can water at temps above 40° through the winter. Just on that nice day go around and give a wee drink. They will like that. If they are getting snow, then they are fine. I have a few on window ledges and they don’t get natures moisture. So don’t forget them.
• Soft/ Tender Succulents – these are succulents that can’t bare being in contact with frost and extremely low temperatures. In reality they can probably withstand temps around 40° for short bursts, longer if you do not water them much if at all. But temps approaching freezing signals your alarm clock to get them into a better and more protected environment.
The temperature aspect here brings on a new twist – for both of these types, the value beyond which they cannot survive varies. For alpine or hardy succulents, the heat of summer is grueling. So try and offer shade from companion plantings, like ornamental grasses or upright flowers like Echeveria, or Zinnia’s. In a pinch, I use a scrap of burlap on the hottest days during the worst part of the day. So usually from 3-5pm in my area. But in Winter, I don’t do much, just don’t overwater. (even when I accidently do they seem fine.)

I use a trick by my front door with a wood planter that creates an “L” so the open door lets a bit of warmth into the L area and I think it raises the temp a couple degrees. Everything planted there does just that much better. You can look for a natural place like that where you notice the snow melts first or the plants stay greener longer, your mini micro-climate.
Okay, we’ve solved ‘keeping them alive’ let’s talk about what to do with them in the next blurb.

Hardy Succulents vs. Tropical Succulents
Check the plant label before you add any succulents to your landscape. Some succulents are rock-solid landscape performers in northern gardens, while others prefer a warmer climate. Use tender succulents in frost-free regions or as houseplants during the winter. I use my cold hardy succulents inside too. they just get dry when the heat is on, so I have to water more. I make little teacup and coffee cup "minivistas" with small deer and rabbits. lots of fun and I always have something to share.

I have already taken cuttings of my tri color sedum for starting some planters early. they have just the tiniest of buds right now. but they are alive. I also started making my own succulent sod, they call it. basically just flats of sedums growing that are rolled out wherever you need something growing because nothing will grow there. lol. succulents will likely be just fine. I don't really roll mine up but you get the idea. I will post a pic. hey it's cold out and it's snowing. lol

Succulents symbolize enduring and timeless love for they are tenacious plants that store water in their thick leaves and stems. ... Succulents are incredible design choices because they naturally contain so many shapes you can work with and integrate into the look of your space. So for Valentines and Mothers day it's a nice gift. I love them for New Years as a symbol of good fortune. but we can use that all year! lol

First real cold snap. The beautiful decorative sweet potato vines are toast. Don't forget to dig up the actual potato (yes, edible) but pack it away. You'll have an even larger vine next year. These are selected and bread for the leaf not flavor. I did feed leaves to my wee guinea pigs, they loved it

Okay, some of your sedum cold hardies may loose leaves with this first frost. but if you want to cover them over with a tarp for the 9pm-9am freeze you could help them acclimate better. but don't worry they will be back in spring. and don't forget to keep adding stems from them to your arrangements this will help fill in in early spring weather. if your not afraid of the cold take some cuttings of your lime zinger and Russian moss so you can use them a little longer in some arrangements. but there are plenty of sempervivums to fill your wreaths and planters. get a few coffee cups from the good will and plant in those. sprinkle with glitter and give as house warming gifts when anyone stops in. they will love them
