Meteorologists are tracking the first area of interest for Hurricane Season 2026. According to Fox13, the actual chances of tropical storm formation are rated as being 'low' (around 10%). Additionally, the storm is trending towards Mexico and will bring that region gusty rain 'regardless of whether it organizes [into a tropical storm]."

Also according to Fox, "The National Hurricane Center is monitoring the system, which is expected to stay far away from Florida."

So, for Floridians, the first couple of weeks of the hurricane season have been quiet. We'll keep alert for any further developments throughout the next five and a half months of the season! Please check out the Fox13 article at the link below for more information:

Did you know that the FGIA's North American Fenestration Standard (NAFS) is part of what helps form the standards and policies that influence the Florida Building Code (FBC)?

Well, it is! And, the FGIA recently announced the release of their 2026 update of the NAFS document!

What does this mean for Floridian homeowners? It may mean changes to the way you buy impact windows in a few years.

The big takeaway is that they're updating window and door specifications to require listing inward and outward design pressure ratings as well as moisture pe*******on resistance.

Get the lowdown from the FGIA in their blog article about the updated standards document:

Are impact windows burglary proof? Not necessarily.

Impact windows have an inherent security advantage over non-impact windows due to their layers of shatter-resistant safety glass and laminate interlayers. So, low-skill attempts to break the windows often fail.

However, not all impact windows are created equally. Some use smart design features to further improve forced entry resistance. For example, this PGT hanging window has a lip that protrudes over the sash bottom to create a secure seal that makes it much more difficult to get a crowbar or other tool under the sash.

Get to know the different parts of impact window anatomy to learn not only how to identify a genuine impact window, but how it helps better protect your home from hurricanes!

The vinyl outer frame provides cushioning and thermal resistance to help your home stay safe and cool.

A reinforced aluminum core provides strength for the frame to stand up to direct impacts from flying debris and impacts.

The safety glass layers are made of durable, heat-treated glass that is hard to crack and designed to break into small, dull square pieces to minimize glass foreign body injury risks.

The PVB interlayer provides a semi-flexible, shock-absorbing layer for the glass to continue sticking to, even when broken, to preserve the seal of the home.

Another, separate layer of low-e glass in this sample reflects away the ultraviolet and infrared rays of the sun, helping reduce the amount of heat that gets into your home.

The mylar & butyl sealant in between the glass panes in the window sash help seal the insulated glass unit to prevent hot outdoor air from leaking into the home and cool indoor air from leaking out.

In a complete window, the insulated glass unit (IGU) containing the glass panes, PVB interlayer, and sealant may also have argon gas fills to further inhibit thermal transfer for improved energy efficiency.

Did you know that your sliding glass doors have weep holes to let any water that manages to build up in the track to drain out? Well, they do!

Keeping your door's weep holes clear and unobstructed is a crucial maintenance step for any home. Blocked weeps let water sit and build up, potentially rusting not just the track, but the wheels of your sliding glass doors.

Keep your door weep holes flowing smoothly by:

1) Vacuuming out the tracks.
2) Clearing the exterior holes with a piece of wire or a cotton swab to break up trapped dirt and algae.
3) Flushing gently with clean water (preferably from a cup or a small spray bottle, not your garden hose).

June 1st marks the official beginning of Hurricane Season 2026! Is your home ready? While it's an El Niño year, which typically means less activity overall, some forecasters are urging Americans to prepare for strong early season storms.

In a recent USA Today article, forecasters warned of the risk of strong early season storms like the historic Hurricane Agnes that struck Florida just three weeks into the 1972 hurricane season. As National Weather Service director Ken Graham stated for the USA Today article: "Like 2026, a strong El Niño was developin in the Pacific Ocean when Agnes formed in 1972."

Later in the article, Graham further warned that "Every Category 5 that's made landfall in this country was a tropical storm or less at three days out... They rapidly intensify and get here quickly."

While El Niño conditions typically result in fewer Atlantic storms, it's important to know that an El Niño doesn't guarantee a lack of storms affecting the state. So, it's important to be ready before storms even form, because you might not have as much warning as you'd like.

Be sure to catch the full story and more of the analysis in the USA Today article:
