Sarracenia alabamensis (Cranebrake Pitcherplant): Playing around with an old camera and using my plants to practice. These alabamensis are glowing with this fall crop.

Drosera tracyii: Other than capillaris, tracyii was the sundew that I saw most frequently in my Florida panhandle exploration. These tracyii were scattered throughout this Sarracenia flava rugelii bog in Blackwater. Though the threadleaf dews can be like weeds in cultivation, I never get tired of seeing these mosquito and gnat destroyers.

It's "Sarracenia jonesii in flower and Calopogon tuberosus in a cataract bog. This site is in South Carolina."

Sarracenia minor (Hooded Pitcherplant): Before this previous visit to the okefenokee I had only seen one Sarracenia minor in person (outside of cultivation). This opportunity showed me that similar to other members of the genus, Sarracenia minor has quite the variety even within populations. The “windows”, venation, anthocyanins, hood shape, etc. show variation between individuals. Also I learned how difficult it can be to get good pictures during a thunderstorm with heavy rain but at least the lighting was good!

Sarracenia minor var. okefenokeensis (Okefenokee Giant Hooded Pitcherplant): Quite a unique perspective! These plants are huge for Sarracenia minor. I was able to see them from the top of the lookout. Any attempt to take a picture of these monsters just yielded a couple of green and brown pixels. I wish I was able to get closer to get pictures and a more accurate size scale. Though I think the isolation of these plants has protected them more than anything.

Sarracenia jonesii (Mountain Sweet Pitcherplant): This specific plant had some of the most interesting morphology of all the plants at this site. Almost looks like Sarracenia alata with the bulbous shape in the upper pitcher. It seemed to be consistent with all the leaves coming from that rhizome as well. There were a few plants with similar shape but this one was the most exaggerated. I still have plenty of photos from this site that I need to share 😅

Sarracenia flava: I still find myself asking other people where the line for var. atropurpurea is. Though the tube is red and the lid is mostly red, I still think this is considered a rubricorpora. But as you can see, compared to the other rubricorporas, this plant isn’t quite the same. It’s apparent that Sarracenia doesn’t like to fit in man-made boxes but that is biology for you. These pics were taken in the Apalachicola National Forest.

Sarracenia flava rugelii (Cut-throat yellow pitcher plant): Though these are all the same “variant” of flava they still come in many forms. These pictures are from two large populations right down the road from one another. Though flava is the most common of the sarrs around here, they’re still incredible plants.

Sarracenia leucophylla (and some moorei): This site was dominated by leucos with some flava rugelii and psitticina present. This was not common for most of the sites I visited. Most sites were primarily flava rugelii with some other sarrs tagging along. I don’t believe these plants had made their best pitchers of the season yet. As some plants here hardly had any “real” pitchers at all.

Drosera filiformis floridana (Florida Red Threadleaf Sundew): These sundews were quite the sight to see. They’re so red it looks like they glow. Especially in contrast to the sand they’re growing in. The Pinguicula at this site were cool to see as well but the field of floridana took the spotlight. Even more overshadowed were the small rosetted sundews and Utricularia.
