I packed and unpacked a senior citizen from an apartment to an independent living facility in two days. We were able to donate 3 boxes of items.... ranging from pots, pans, dishes, blankets, and clothes. But we also threw away 10 garbage bags full of broken, old, and dirty items as well as trash that was laying around the house.

Here's to moving on and up!!!

Isn't this the truth? Ageing parents who have inherited THEIR parents' items and accumulated their own. Spending money on storage or using up garage space because no one can let anything go.

Where will this stuff go when it becomes yours? And do you want to be dealing with this and losing your parent at the same time? It can add a layer of unnecessary stress.

Cabinets.... in general, organizing a cabinet doesn't take too long. In this case, the surplus of office supplies, made it a little tricky. While I always recommend only keeping what is necessary in valuable cupboard space, minimizing stockpiles is not always an option for every client. Boxes, labels, and bins are extremely useful for projects like this.

2 points I want to make about a job like this....
1. Organizing in REAL LIFE isn't always pretty matching baskets and color coded stickers. What it usually is, is taking your things and arrangung them way in an way that makes sense. It's displaying the items that you want to look at and it's sorting and organizing things so they are easy to find and make sense.

2. Teenagers. Hiring an organizer to work with your teen is a great way to help your child. Many children are more open to working with a stranger than they would be with their parent. You know how it is. 😏 I happen to have a masters in education and am able to find positive and rewarding ways to work with kids and help them take ownership in the decision making process.

A 4 hour project today. My client moved in to her new home a month ago.

Yes! You can see that the space is now "cleaner". But behind every cabinet and every drawer is much great function that you can't see.

I used some poorly used shelving from other parts of the house to provide extra storage. A helpful tip is to move heavy small appliances to easy -to-reach shelves, instead of trying to tuck them away in some cabinet or lazy Susan. Even if they aren't used very often, they will even less likely be used if you put them somewhere that is hard to reach.. this is especially important for older clients, as heavier items need to be easily accessed without having to bend or twist or lift from odd angles.
