Pre-orders are now LIVE! Happy Ohio Native Plant Month!

Plants will be ready for pickup when we reopen on May 1. You can also opt to pick up your plants in Lakewood on May 16 or in Gates Mills on May 23.

If you prefer to shop in person, not to worry. All species will be replenished when we reopen on May 1.

This year, we were able to grow plenty of our most popular spring bloomers, including Jacob's ladder (Polemonium reptans). Isn't it gorgeous? Happy shopping, and enjoy the beautiful weather today!

For all you early planners, pre-orders start this Saturday, April 4! But we always restock when we reopen in May, so you don't need to worry about missing out if you prefer to shop in person.

If you've been to the nursery, you've probably met Dave, our co-owner and educator. Over the next few weeks, there will be many opportunities to hear him speak!

And you really should hear him. Dave's engaging talks bring to light local natural history that you may not have heard before. There are practical talks for beginners, and deeper dives, like his newest talk on the meadows of Northeast Ohio.

Come and gather inspiration among other people who care about making a difference.

We’ve finally defeated an old foe: our huge, invasive tree of heaven!

Tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) was introduced to the United States in the late 1700s as an ornamental plant. It reseeds widely and grows quickly to crowd out native plants, especially in disturbed soils. This tree is also the preferred host of the invasive spotted lanternfly.

Mature tree of heaven is hard to kill! Cut one down, and you’ll get a hundred root sprouts. We applied herbicide to the trunk for three years (using the hack-and-squirt method) until it finally died last year. Looking forward to replacing it with a native tree.

Thanks to Ardmore Tree Services for their help. We always recommend working with an ISA Certified Arborist. They will help you keep your big trees while protecting your home!

Big news for the nursery: we now own our land! We are so thrilled and grateful. We have been leasing our land from the Cleveland Land Bank since 2022, and it was not a given that we would be able to own it one day.

Under Mayor Justin M. Bibb, the Cleveland Land Bank has been making changes to their policies that made this purchase possible. Owning our land allows us to keep investing in the nursery without fearing that a developer might swoop in and buy it.

We want to thank the ever-patient Land Bank staff for making this possible. We also owe many thanks to Councilman Polensek for his help when we hit snags in other stages of building the nursery. (Talk about responsive - the man answered his phone while lobbying in DC to keep federal funding!)

We couldn’t have started this nursery in any city besides Cleveland. We owe so much to the growers who came before us and the urban agriculture policies they pioneered. Here’s to many more years of growing native plants and improving our little corner of Cleveland ❤️

Happy fall! The nursery is now open by appointment only until spring. Just reach out if you'd like to browse our plants or pick up an online order.

We plan to take online pre-orders in April and reopen the nursery in May, as we did this year. Shrink Your Lawn Kits will be back in stock, and we'll be offering physical and digital gift cards for the holidays.

It's been a big year at the nursery (and not a little tiring)! The business is finally coming into focus. Each year we improve a little - adding a few more species, growing more plants, and operating a little more smoothly. Wrapping up our fourth year in business, we're very grateful to have made it this far.

To the lifelong gardeners adding more natives, the new homeowners replacing their lawns, everyone who visits because they'd rather buy local, and all the helpers who show up to plant our gardens and pot up plants - THANK YOU! We wouldn't be here without you.
