This month we will be focusing on Medeco and its products. The security of any locking system is dependant on two very important factors. The first is protection against attacks such as picking and drilling. The second is the ability to control duplication of existing keys. Historically, unauthorized key duplication has played a major role in compromising even the most sophisticated security systems. anyone with even temporary access has no problem getting duplicates made for their own use if the keys and blanks are not patent protected. Medeco has counteracted the key control problem by manufactoring cylindars which use keys that must be made on special key cutting machines, selling high quality, precision machined cylinders and locks, and investing heavily in research and development. Today we will be focusing on the difference between LFIC and SFIC interchangable cores. LFIC (Large Format Interchangeable Core) are lock cylinders made by major manufacturers like Schlage and Yale, LFIC core similar to SFIC core, but an LFIC core differs from an SFIC core in that the size and shape of the core from different brands may vary. The face of both cores looks like a figure 8. In small format interchangeable core, both circles are concentric but with large format, the bottom circle is larger. In addition, SFIC is more universal than LFIC, SFIC cores are cross-compatible while LFIC cores are not cross-compatible, but the keys used for SFIC locks should have a lower profile than most commercial keyways. Going more into interchangable cores there are three types, small format, large format and full format. Today we will be focusing on small format. The way the system works is two key minimum. One of the keys is called a core key. The core key allows you to remove the core(cylinder) from the lock. The other key operates the lock like a normal key. The core key cannot unlock the door, it is only used to remove the core. SFIC works with many locks. You can have a SFIC for door knob/lever, deadbolt, electronic access control system, and more. Expanding more on interchangable cores and the security they offer for your home, In the real world, keys are lost, stolen, loaned, and copied. Departments expand, move and contract. Staff is hired, promoted, moved, and departs. All of these events lead to the 20 percent annual decline of internal key control. The Interchangeable Core was developed to help solve these post-installation key control problems. Entire buildings or homes could be pinned in-shop, and then field-installed in minutes.
