Good morning,
Today is Earth Day, began in 1970 as a day of awareness to the fragile nature of the planet we live upon. Worldwide and somewhat due to ignorance, but mostly because of a selfish and self-centered attitudes we are slowly and in some cases rapidly destroying what gives us life. It’s hard for me to believe that people cannot see beyond their own self-interests to include the future of their grandchildren. There is a book that was published in 1968 or 69 titled The Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth by Buckminster Fuller. Among other defining statements, the author addressed what is happening today as the result of human indifference to our planet.

Hope is not lost. On one hand many countries are making the effort to eliminate the causes of manmade climate change. On the other hand many countries ignore the fact their practices are destroying our planet.

Car manufacturers are being forced to eliminate the internal combustion engine. The shipping industry is being called out on their contribution to climate change. Plastic bag manufactures are currently looking for alternatives.

Two examples; Saudi Arabia, a country with more oil than any other country is going 100% alternative. China, the second largest economic force in the World is going alternative faster than any other country in the World.

The evidence is everywhere. Alternative power sources versus burning carbon. The elimination of single use plastics. The development of alternative sources to carbon based plastics. The legalities of eliminating food waste. The creation of green environments, both on a small and large scale for the purpose of creating a better lifestyle. Sustainable fishing practices. The awareness of clean water. I’m sure the list goes on by those that care for our future.

Know to the point. Here we sit in the USA in 2018 with a President and Congress hell bent on environmental destruction and taking away the rights and privileges of its citizens to enjoy the wonderful physical features of our country. This attitude must change. Whoever you voted for in the upcoming elections, you must be held responsible to ask the question, “What is your stance on the environment”? If you cannot ask this question or cannot support any legislation to protect our planet or are a climate change denier, don’t vote. Just keep your head in the sand. You will not have to worry about your grandchildren because there will be no planet for them to live upon.

Earth Day is not just a one day a year thing, it’s a life style. I have been designing sustainable homes since 1973 with my first solar home in 1978. I do this every day and it really feels good. Just take one step in saving out planet, you might like it and then do a little more the next day. Remember, your grandchildren depend on what you do today.

For those that missed it, a little over a year ago I was interviewed by Crain's asking my opinion of the possible site selection process facing Sherwin Williams for it's new world headquarters. When I asked why they wanted my opinion, I was told that I was the only architect in Cleveland experienced with high rise buildings due to all the work I did with the Jacobs organization.

This is a new commission the studio is very excited about. It is an "Infill" new construction single family home with an apartment placed above the garage. It is located at the edge where The Ohio City Neighborhood and The Tremont Neighborhood meet. The exciting part of this commission is it fills in the neighborhood where a home once stood, but no longer, it addresses the issue of new single family urban home supply, the issue of the automobile in an urban setting, and addresses the issue of affordable housing. As I mentioned at the beginning, the studio is very excited with this commission.
