Process Creative Studios, Inc.

Process Creative Studios, Inc. Process Creative Studios is a boutique design and architecture firm. We are licensed in Ohio and Illinois.

When asked what our design specialty is, John Williams, our principal, is fond of saying that Process has a creative lack of focus. He means that our expertise is not concentrated in one particular design specialty, e.g. commercial, residential, retail, education, theaters, interiors, etc. We view the design process from a problem-solving perspective, and our solutions are based on practical, func

tional design principles that meet the needs and aspirations of our clients, regardless of the project type. Ray Eames, one of the great designers of the 20th Century, said it best when she said, “What works is better than what looks good.” Good design begins with good function. Ultimately, as can be seen from our images, the spaces we design are also beautiful. Process has designed substantial projects for several of the largest law firms in Cleveland - Baker & Hostetler, Squire Sanders and Thompson Hine - as well as for Forest City Enterprises, Heinen's, the Cleveland Museum of Art and The Ritz-Carlton. Ranging from the redesign of commercial office space to complete restaurant and retail design and branding, we bring good design to the process. Our efficient size helps us maintain close relationships with our clients and the highest standards in design and ethics.

Yeah, we don't post a whole lot these days but it's mostly because we've been damn busy with lots of cool projects. One of them was noted in Crain's this week. Delighted to be doing another project for one of our longest term clients, the Riverside Companies. Great folks that are taking the highest floor between NYC and Chicago! Excited to be doing this great space for great clients!

The private equity firm has long enjoyed its Terminal Tower home, but finds it's time for a change.

This was posted five years ago. Saturday will mark 29 years for Process Creative Studios, Inc. Despite misinterpretations of John Williams’s professional intent and pivot, Process has been extremely busy, working on some fantastic projects with fantastic clients and humans. Some highlights would be the new 21,000 sf office for University Settlement in Slavic Village, finally under construction after much Covid delay; BAYarts adaptive reuse of the Huntington Playhouse; planning studies for Zygote Press, the Cleveland International Film Festival, Summit County Public Defender; and two stellar planning projects with our joint-venture partner, Perspectus Architects, for the Akron Art Museum and The Music Settlement. Also very proud to be doing another corporate office for a client we’ve had since nearly our start: the Riverside Companies. Lots going on and much in the non-profit sector. More soon but, in the meantime, here are some highlights that make us proud.

Process is sponsoring a wonderful event for those interested in color and paint, Katrin Trautwein will be traveling from Switzerland to Cleveland next week to visit family and has generously offered to give a presentation on her detailed studies of Corbusier’s paint selections. Space is limited but will be a fascinating presentation!!

Dr. Katrin Trautwein, who holds a degree in Chemistry from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, has spent more than 25 years creating paint colors using extraordinary pigments. 👩‍🔬

Her presentation at Bialosky will focus on color classics, color myths, exotic pigments, and new principles of color design. 🎨

Very excited for University Settlement and the new project they are doing with the NRP Group. We are designing University Settlement's new offices on the first floor of the building, designed by RDL. Wonderful team and a great collaboration.

A five-acre vacant parcel on Cleveland's Broadway Avenue where St. Michael Hospital once stood could become home to a $16 million mixed-use development with 88 housing units under a plan by the Cleveland developer and the social service provider.

This was posted yesterday to John’s (yea, mine) personal page. Thought it should also be posted here. Process is NOT going away. We’re just shifting direction a bit and working to deliver design and projects in different manners.

These are the tools of my trade. I love the feel of graphite moving across paper. I also love the feel of the mouse working the cursor. For 25 years, running a business, even a successful, design-based one, took time away from using these tools. No complaints and no regrets; it's been wonderful with many high points. For several years, I’ve felt the need for a change. So, I’m dialing back the pressures of business, including staff, which brings mixed emotions. I want to spend MORE time practicing my trade: drawing, designing, and problem solving. I want to more deeply engage the practice of architecture and design. Call me to talk about design. Call me to discuss collaborations. Call me to explore opportunities.

I am currently working on the wide variety of interesting projects for which we are known. For the larger projects, I have explored collaborations with other firms to help execute these jobs, with my focus on design and client contact. For the smaller jobs, I look forward to performing all of the tasks, allowing one hand on the details throughout a project. This will give me space to breathe and focus on creativity.

Since high school, I have taken inspiration from the great jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, who, at the peak of his career, took a hiatus from performance to hone his skills. For three years, he played for hours at night, on the Williamsburg Bridge in NYC, ultimately releasing an album called The Bridge. I hope that this small but properly detailed transition is my bridge to re-explore my craft. I look forward to talking. And to that feeling of graphite as it moves gracefully across the paper.

24 years on April 15. Hard to believe. When I stop and look back at our projects, I am actually surprised at the breadth of work and the impact that we’ve had in our community. I hear this all the time: “You did that?! I didn’t know that.” Dobama Theatre. The restoration of The Silver Grille and the Observation Deck at the Terminal Tower. Shaker Square Cinemas. The Heinen’s Rotunda. The Transformer Station. Numerous corporate offices. So, after 24 years, I thought it made sense to share a small retrospective. Thanks for all of your support! ~John C. After 20 years in our wonderful offices across from the West Side Market in Ohio City, we have moved. It's a temporary move to Little Italy and we plan to be back in the heart of Ohio City soon. It's amazing how much great work was created in this old space, which was an old ballroom from the 1890s. We left the walls as we found them. Good memories.

A Border Wall between Canada and the USA? Given the emphasis on our southern border with Mexico, are we missing something? Like a whole northern exposed border? This is a call out to creative types to help think and, perhaps, editorialize, about the need, or not, for walls and borders. SPACES is doing a competition. With prize money!

SPACES is the resource and public forum for artists who explore and experiment.
