Just doing my part. Bro was one bad decision away from becoming road art. 🐢😬😂

Now you know why the answer to “How often should I water it?” is almost always… it depends. 🤷🏾‍♀️

A plant’s water needs are influenced by its rate of transpiration…and that rate changes based on factors like temperature, sunlight, wind, humidity, plant type, leaf size, age and root establishment.

The more you understand how plants use and lose water, the better your watering decisions become.💪🏾

Hope it helps!

Rue has been grown in gardens for generations and is often valued for its strong fragrance and natural pest-repelling qualities.

Up close, its blue-green leaves have a soft, rounded clustered shape and the tiny yellow flowers add a soft glow against the foliage.

- Drought tolerant once established
- Deer and rabbit resistant
- Traditionally used in herb gardens
- Pairs well with Mediterranean-style plantings
- Creates strong visual contrast in the landscape

Rue has long been appreciated as both a functional and ornamental garden plant and it’s easy to see why once the flowers begin to open.

Critters are always trying to steal our plant joy!😂😂…so we’re trying artificial owls this season…we heard they’re pretty helpful in keeping garden critters out…and honestly, we’ve noticed less foot traffic since putting them up. Has anyone else had any luck with them?

People definitely called me crazy for leaving my career in government video production later in life to build a new one around plants, environmental documentation and the outdoors… but some decisions feel bigger than comfort. In fact, for me, there is no such thing as a “comfort zone.”

My minority certified small business, 40 Day Communications, blends horticulture, environmental documentation and visual storytelling into a growing archive rooted in plants, landscapes and legacy.

This work goes far beyond photography and videography. It’s research, field documentation, exploration, education and preserving the stories living all around us.

If you love nature, peaceful spaces and the idea of leaving the world a little better than you found it…follow along!

Grow the Story. Shape the Space.

Don’t knock it, til you try it😘

People will doubt what they’ve never seen you do before.

They doubted my urban farm. They’ll doubt the plant nursery. They’ll doubt the work before it has time to manifest.

That’s fine.

I’m in the greenhouse learning plant production systems and building skill. I don’t argue with doubt. I let the work speak for itself.

Some spaces get overlooked because they’re small.

Too small to matter. Too small to fix. Too small to be beautiful.

But small spaces shape how we live, too.

That’s what we do at 40 Day Communications and 40 Day Living. We turn tired urban spaces into living habitats that bring beauty back and make room for pollinators, birds and wildlife too.

This one was personal.
The client was my mother… so yes, the Dahlia bloom got clipped almost as soon as we planted it.

Honestly, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

If you know someone in D.C. or Maryland with a space that needs a little life in it, send them our way.

Follow for urban habitat transformations, native plants, slow living and the honest rhythm of building a business, a marriage and a life with intention.

You see that little strip of ground by the sidewalk?

Most people walk past it every day thinking, “Nothing’s going to grow there.”

Too compacted.
Too dry.
Too much foot traffic.

But that’s exactly where I come in.

Cheryl A. Williams, CTS
Environmental Systems & Horticultural Multimedia Consultant

I specialize in transforming tough urban growing spaces, especially DC row houses and sidewalk planting strips, into living, breathing green spaces that work with the environment, not against it.

If you’re tired of looking at lifeless ground in front of your home or business, let’s change that.

Let’s bring it to life!
