Yesterday’s NatureFest at the College of Southern MD LaPlata Campus was such a good time! We spent the afternoon making a terrarium, meeting interesting people, looking at solar flares through various telescopes and exploring all kinds of nature and conservation exhibits.

Between the perfect weather, fresh air and great conversations, it was the kind of event that makes you grateful for a community of people who genuinely enjoy learning about and caring for the natural world.

One of the fastest ways to lose healthy seedlings is to take them straight from indoors and plant them outside.

Seedlings need time to harden off: adjust to direct sunlight, wind and changing temperatures. That’s why gardeners harden them off first, gradually increasing their time outdoors over several days before planting.

A little patience now can mean stronger, healthier plants later.

If you’ve ever picked up a rock because it “looked cool,” you’d probably love rock hounding!

Rock hounding is basically the hobby of searching for and learning about rocks, minerals, crystals and fossils out in nature. Tonight’s meeting was just a really fun chance to sit back, kick it, learn about different rock/mineral shapes and enjoy being around other people who think rocks are cool too!💪🏾🤓😉

And honestly…it’s fascinating to think that some of the world’s most precious stones started as ordinary rocks before years of heat and pressure transformed them into something completely different.

Have you ever found a rock or crystal you couldn’t stop staring at?

Bought a few artificial owls last winter to see if they’ll be helpful in protecting our plants this season. So far…we’ve seen less foot traffic (and we have all types of plant invading critters down here in Southern MD)…so they’re definitely keepers!
