Let’s talk FUNGUS: Pictured is Ganoderma zonatum, a strain of fungi that afflicts palms causing butt rot.

Currently, there is no method to control the fungus once it is in a palm. There is however methods to prevent the fruiting body from taking up residency. Ensuring the palm has correct drainage and nutrition will keep its immune system, and overall health, in good shape.

Fungi spores can stick to boots, clothing, and even tools like shovels and chainsaws. Sterilization of hand tools when working around or with infected plants is an absolute must to avoid spreading the fungus further. Disposal of infected palms also requires additional care for the same reason.
