HOW TO do Gas Furnace Maintenance – Keep Your Forced Air System Running Efficiently All Winter

Complete DIY Maintenance Guide That Saves You $200-400 in Professional Service Calls

Neglected gas furnaces waste 15-30% more energy and frequently break down during the coldest months when you need heating most. Many homeowners avoid furnace maintenance because two-stage forced air systems seem complex, but proper preventive maintenance requires just 15 minutes monthly and prevents costly emergency repairs when your heating system fails during peak winter.

Here are the 5 HVAC tactics every homeowner should steal to make their heating and cooling system more efficient, cost-effective, and properly sized.

(And if you're not? Well, you're leaving money (and comfort) on the table.

When your HVAC system is properly sized and maintained, you accelerate energy savings and cut down on those sky-high utility bills and constant repair headaches.)

1. Get proper load calculations before installation

If you are not demanding Manual J load calculations from your HVAC installer, you are majorly missing out. Most HVAC systems aren't properly sized, which makes professional load calculations the perfect way to ensure what system performance *actually* looks like outside of those outdated contractor estimates.

1. Use professional assessments to avoid oversized disasters

There is nothing worse than the nagging 'We'll just go bigger to be safe' approach. No, bigger is not better. Instead, lead with professional sizing - get accurate measurements NOW, for your specific home. Professional assessments create precision while letting you experience the system's true value. Show, don't guess!

1. Invest into regular maintenance

Before you say - woah woah woah, we just installed this thing and it should work perfectly… I have no doubt in your system's capabilities.

However, many homeowners end up skipping their maintenance calls, ignore filter changes, or maybe they didn't need service at that time, but now something has changed.

They'll end up dealing with short cycling on their own, getting frustrated… and - GASP - possibly looking for a completely new system. And here you go being disrupted by massive repair bills.

1. Use performance signals to prevent breakdowns

In HVAC, if you're not monitoring your system, someone else is selling you repairs. And if you're waiting until a complete breakdown or annual service to check performance? You're already too late.

Instead, you need to track usage data (energy bills, cycling frequency, temperature consistency, and/or unusual noises) and act on warning signs in a timely manner.

1. Lastly, invest into innovative sizing technology.

I strongly believe that technology will be the future of HVAC sizing. Modern companies utilize advanced tools all the time, just look at LiDAR measurements, automated load calculations, or 3D modeling software.

But some of the biggest traditional contractors are doing it too. Case in point:

Modern HVAC sizing software – These platforms are more than calculators; they're comprehensive ecosystems where contractors generate accurate assessments, visual presentations, and detailed load calculations, turning guesswork into precise science. This technology-driven approach builds trust, ensures efficiency, and helps close the deal on proper system sizing.

Did you know that it is said that 95% of all heating and cooling systems installed in the United States are incorrectly sized, most often oversized? This not only wastes utility costs but also leads to numerous problems like higher energy bills, frequent repairs, and discomfort at home. In this arti...

WHY Load Calculations for Sizing HVAC Equipment and Duct systems correctly will SAVE your System!

It is said that 95% of ALL Heating and Cooling systems installed in the United States...are incorrectly sized. Most often OVERSIZED. This not only wastes utility costs, but prematurely ages and damages your equipment, cutting its useful life short, sometimes significantly so.

This is completely avoided by properly sizing your equipment and ductwork as well as designing and installing it CORRECTLY. This is Not as easy as hiring a "Heating and Cooling Contractor." Because few in my experience perform load calculations or airflow analysis, AT ALL! And probably do not even know how to do so.

If you put the wrong sized equipment, or ductwork, or airflow characteristics then not only will it NOT work properly to maintain comfort, but may destroy itself trying to. It is not worth the risk.

Just hire a certified and licensed EXPERT to work on, repair, replace or install your Heating and Cooling equipment and get it done right the first time. It is CHEAPER for you in the end, to hire the best. Repair Bear Heating and Cooling is just that, experts who put your comfort above all. You can count on Repair Bear to look out for you throughout the entire process and give you informed recommendations for SOLUTIONS, not just new equipment.

One size does NOT fit all...when it comes to your heating and cooling system.

Call us with any questions or if we can help you in the Cody and Powell Wyoming area!

Ductwork matters! This blog post on our Repair-Bear website discusses how simply changing out your Heating and Cooling equipment, without analyzing the sufficiency of your existing ductwork...is like changing the oil in your car but not changing the oil filter at the same time!

Understanding Why Ductwork in an HVAC System is Critical to Performance and Longevity When replacing or having new Heating and Cooling Equipment installed, it is ALWAYS of paramount importance to not only have a Heat Gain and Loss Load calculation performed by your HVAC expert professional, but ALSO...

I saw a post/comment in a group that made me think I should post this information, because it is virtually unknown by many, and was by me as well, until it was brought to my attention.
Water Well Pumps and Systems maintenance, repairs and installation and Pump/Motor Replacement is highly regulated in Wyoming, and requires THREE state licenses for anyone to touch a Water Well, other than the well owner.
It is illegal, actually a crime, for anyone except Licensed Well Pump Installation Contractors (or the well owners themselves) to perform ANY work on water well systems in Wyoming. Even Well Drilling Contractors cannot do any electrical or pump replacement or system repairs work, unless they also have the THREE Pump Installer licenses Issued by the State of Wyoming.
Wyoming owns ALL of the ground water and protects it from contamination or waste, by strictly regulating it. Anyway, this information is not well known at all.
I am a Master Plumber, but can only do Well Pump System Repairs or installations because I ALSO am licensed with the Wyoming Board of Water Well Drilling and Pump Installation contractors AND with the State of Wyoming Electrical licensing agency. Has been this way since 2008.
Please see my own Licenses below, to understand the agencies and licensing involved for doing Well Pump repairs and servicing or pump and component replacements. As with most things, only hiring properly licensed contractors is important for your safety and for legal compliance.
