“Marriages is two people in love standing in the same bathroom.”

This is a print of a blackout poetry piece by artist Austen Kleon that I acquired years ago. In fact I acquired a few and gave them as wedding gifts with bath towels sets off of the bride and groom’s registries.

We have ours framed in our primary bath with Scalamandré | Luxury Fabrics & Wallcoverings zebras as its backdrop, and I love the whole vibe. And the sentiment. Because when you boil it down, brushing your teeth next to the person whom you love most in the world is a remarkable privilege. 💙

Sunrise skies this morning over the carriage house. Remember those enormous trees behind this structure that kept toppling over in storms and causing damage so they had to come down in the early spring? I don’t miss them at all. Especially when the sky looks like this. Happy Tuesday that feels like a Monday! 💙

We have had a glorious long weekend. Mostly blue skies and sunshine, and temps in the 60s and 70s. I had dinner with my bestie last night while Steve and Evvie went out on the boat. This morning I’m having coffee in the sunroom and working on this handsome beast who looks exactly like our Puck. I’m stitching him in Very Velvet and the back ground in Essentials. I just love how saturated the velvet is. I’ve been eyeing this canvas by Claire Lambert | Pet Portrait Artist and ✨ Spellbound Stitchery ✨ for ages and finally ordered it recently. The colors are making me so happy. And working on it while listening to a new audio book called Dying to Meet You is my plan for today. Happy Labor Day. 💙

Today’s plan: make notable progress towards finishing this Collect Beauty canvas from my 1st (2nd?) canvas drop with The Gingham Stitchery so I can have it finished as a pillow for my living room. I love this canvas, (in fact I tweaked it for two more designs, one for Christmas and one for Hanukkah.) I love the leopard print and the bamboo letters (I spent a lot of time getting them just right!), and the palette. But also the sentiment, one I live by. I have found it so important to surround myself with things I love, things I find beautiful as we’ve navigated life during these times. Beauty doesn’t take the sting, the shame, the heartache away, but it does provide a bit of solace, a temporary distraction, an opportunity to be around things that bring a bit of joy into our lives. 💙

Anyone else need a shot of color this morning? It’s another dreary day here. But my garden flowers are thriving and I remembered I had this vibrant yellow vase to put them in.

Also, let this post be a reminder to me to finally raise the hook the tray my grandmother painted is hanging on over the kitchen fireplace. I used an existing hook to make sure I liked it here and then forgot to adjust it.🥴

A meeting scheduled for today was postponed and I left the day open and quiet on purpose. I am still recovering emotionally and physically from the last two months so I am taking care of small manageable tasks around the house with needlepointing breaks every so often. I’m going to try to lean into the holiday weekend before getting back to real life next week.

Somehow this boy, this beautiful, joyful, sunny little boy is now a senior in high school. With blue hair and an eyebrow piercing.🤣 I am so deeply proud of him and so excited to see him navigate everything ahead.

I’ve actually got two seniors this year - Milo is a senior in college(!) this year but that felt a bit overshadowed by him heading abroad. It’s a big year for the Sheffield boys! And we are so proud of them both!

The view from the family room into the front hall. The space is warm and layered and full of treasure. The closed door in the hallways is to our metallic-gold leopard-patterned wallpaper-clad bar. We don’t do shrinking violets around here! 😜

I have spent much of today picking up the house. The days before Milo left were hectic and a blur and, to be honest, so was much of the summer. So I cleaned and organized and put away so many things to reset before Finn starts senior year tomorrow. 🤯

But, speaking of Milo, he just called to check-in from his home base in New Zealand. He’s there, settled, happy, and was headed to breakfast. 💙
