Propagating Justicia americana with clippings is so successful that I’ve never needed to try planting seeds. American water-willow seeds generally pop out of the seed capsule as it opens making them hard to collect. I might try planting a few this year to see how they germinate!

I propagate American water-willow through stem clippings. My success rate in the nursery is almost 100%. The most recent batch of clippings was planted on April 5. This is one of a few extra clippings that were left in water only to grow roots.

I had an another fun morning teaching 2nd Grade at Darren’s school! We discussed types of aquatic plants and the differences between them. They already knew we need aquatic plants for our animals as a food source. We also talked about what animals use them for habitat and other benefits of native aquatic plants. We wrapped up with a activity to demonstrate how a drop of water moves through the water cycle. Most of our “water drops” ended up in the ocean!

Swamp milkweed is easily propagated using seeds! The seeds can be planted immediately or stored. They will germinate readily, although some sources say 4 weeks of cold moist stratification will improve germination. I typically plant seeds in seed trays and then transplant when the plants are 6" or taller.
