Fall is for Planting Sale on now!

Fall is the best time to plant perennials, and there’s still plenty of time to get your plants in the ground to give them a head start for the next growing season.

Check out our current selection of flowers, grasses, and shrubs available for pickup in Collingswood or local delivery. Not seeing something specific that you’ve been after? Drop us a line, and we may be able to get it.

https://wildrootsnj.com/native-plant-shop

All plants are grown sustainably by our growing partners in South Jersey with no insecticides or fungicides.

Note that plants are not in stock at the time of ordering - we’ll be making weekly pickups from our network of growing partners. Plants will be available in about 3-7 business days from your order.

And if you’re planning something large scale, we’re always available to help with custom sourcing.

Many shore birds were spotted and many bad bird photos were taken during a chilly spring break trip to Cape May. We were most excited to see oyster catchers, ospreys, and many unique duck species we still need to identify. Little bluestem was the star of The Nature Conservancy’s South Cape Meadows, which looked and felt a lot like winter, and so grateful this space exists. Back home with pockets full of sand and shells and Cape May diamonds.

Natural plant communities are the best inspiration for creating natural looking landscapes at home. Yesterday on the way to drop our pup off with my brother and sister in law for the weekend, Wes and I stopped for a rainy walk at Ridley Creek State Park.

It was so lovely to see shady woodland slopes popping with the greens and whites of Christmas ferns (Polystichum acrostichoides) and bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) against the browns, grays, and blues of a late spring day in a mixed deciduous forest. All you birders and fungi identifying folks would have been busy too.

The paved trails here are great for kids because you can bring their bikes, scooters, or strollers. We just walked and stopped at all of the “tiny waterfalls” that were especially noticeable after all of the rain. Ridley Creek also has a fishing pier specifically designed for and open only to those who fish from wheelchairs, which could be the perfect way for someone you love to get out in nature.

It's a jam-packed, exciting week for us here in Collingswood! A series of events starts Wednesday with Tim leading a conversation about the importance of tree canopy coverage in our neighborhoods. (You might be surprised by how many folks don't want trees planted and/or want them removed.)

For those of you who don't know, one of Tim's first jobs was with the Forest Service and his current full-time job is Director of Trees for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. He spends much of his time working with communities in and around Philadelphia, focused on increasing tree canopy coverage and protecting our watersheds with water-wise landscapes. He volunteers on Collingswood's Shade Tree Commission, created Collingswood's first Environmental Resource Inventory, and together we've worked on multiple native garden projects as part the Collingswood Green Team and co-owners of Wild Roots. We hope to see you there for what should be a good conversation.

Please join us for our Green Team meeting and a conversation about community and urban forestry, the benefits of trees, challenges, and the importance of managing, maintaining, and growing our tree canopy cover. 🌳 🐦
Featured Speaker: Tim Ifill - Director of Trees, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Collingswood Shade Tree Committee Member.
💚The Collingswood Green Team Meeting & Lecture Series is open to all community members💚

Time spent in the Outer Coastal Plain 🌊 has lead to a wild, messy Inner Coastal Plain space here at home, but one that’s beautiful and buzzing as it continues transitioning through seasons and time. One perk to ecological gardening — working toward something bigger than to fulfill a deranged vision of “perfection” and “order” that corporations have spent loads of time and money trying to sell you on is that it takes just a few minutes of observation to redirect negative energy into something positive. Paths are covered, diseased coneflowers need pulling, and there are always weeds — but this is still ultimately providing for so many beautiful, beneficial beings. 🐝 🦋 🐛 🐞 🐜 🦅
