If you grow, you show!
Why?
The word compete comes from the Latin competere, which means to seek together, strive in common, coincide. Placing your dahlias, however humble they may look, on the show bench is not so much about the award plaque. It's about what you learn in the process about yourself and what you are growing. It's about the kinship you experience with other dahlia growers who love this flower as much as you do.π₯°Your knowledge and appreciation for the dahlia will expand because you will never look at her the same way again after a dahlia show. Following the judges and hearing their detailed commentary on the blooms--you realize this octoploid with eight sets of chromosomes is a wonder of nature! 12 size classifications, 19 forms, 16 color classes...you will never get bored with the dahlia! As you change over the years, she's right there with you offering hues and shapes to match where you are in life. Hanging with your dahlia peeps means forming friendships for life, encouraging each other and having fun! This year the Colorado Dahlia Show will be September 5 & 6 at The Flower Bin in Longmont. The theme will be "American Pride in Bloom". This year celebrates the 250th anniversary of the founding of America. It is also the 150th anniversary of Colorado statehood.π±π· Bringing these two iconic events together is the theme for the 2026 Colorado Dahlia Society show. Plan to come to the August 1st meeting of the Southern Colorado Dahlia Society at Pura Vida Garden Center where we will talk about how to get your blooms ready for this show! As a local society, we will go together and cheer each other on as we have some fun with our beloved dahlia. Let me know what questions you have. π
