Big, big thank you to everyone who has reached out this past week after my fall. Nothing appears to be broken, xrays did find a defect I was born with on a vertebrae, and concussion recovery seems to be going well.
Maybe you find me odd for sharing this “private” health update publicly, but I always aim to be as authentic and transparent as possible. It’s also month, and as someone who deals with chronic pain it’s pretty cool to identify one of the (many) causes.
I might be moving a bit slower these next few weeks, as something in my back is still pretty messed up. But for now, I'm happy to be able to keep down food and water, I can walk and stand for short amounts of time, and am so thankful that I can work from home on my business things and take the time I need to recover.
If you're curious about the non-fall related finding, because I'm a nerd and always like funky anomalies, here's what was shown on the x-ray. The image is mirrored, but what you're looking at is a Hemisacralization of the left L5 transverse process with pseudoarticulation of the sacrum. Basically the left arm on the last transitional vertebrae before my sacrum is larger than it should be and rubs against my sacrum/pelvis, creating a false joint! This could be the cause of a lot of the chronic lower back pain I've dealt with for years. I'm super thankful to the xray tech who nearly gave me a mini-heart attack by asking if my left side hurt more than right, and responded with an ominous "well, huh!" when I said no. Not only did he catch it and ensure there was clear imaging, he followed up with the radiologist afterwards to learn more out of curiosity.
So far, that makes 3 different xrays I've had now that show some sort of funky extra bone or bone spur.
Clearly, I'm my own kind of cryptid.
