Autumn Garden Club sessions are live! It’s going to be a fun and full Fall season. Descriptions are below, however, themes and activities are subject to change based on available supplies.

This season Garden Club is meeting on Thursday mornings. If you’re missing the Friday offerings or need some non-school hour times, standby. More sessions will be coming out soon.

September:
-9/11 “Nature Exploration”: Field Trip to Woodland Park. We’re going to make colorful hiking sticks, do a scavenger hunt/nature walk, make a trail mix and enjoy the last bit of summer.

-9/25 “Fall Orchard”: We’re back at the clubhouse garden and will be exploring a fall orchard theme. We’ll make apple stamped market totes, do an apple tasting, and explore some other fall harvest activities.

October:
-10/2 “Boo Buckets” are back for the 3rd year! Kiddos will have an opportunity to create a small container garden of mums, pansies and other decorations in a trick or treat bucket. If you’ve been looking for this session and this time doesn’t work, stay tuned another opportunity will be offered!

-10/16 “Pumpkin Exploration”: We’re going to get messy! We’ll be dissecting a pumpkin, talking about the life cycle of a pumpkin and maybe even taste testing some pumpkin/squash.

November:
-11/6 “Spice Cabinet”: We’ll be making some spice blends that kiddos can take home and help use in the upcoming holiday baking and cooking. From grating cinnamon and nutmeg to making herb infused salts.

-11/20 “Living Ornament”: We’ll make an ornament using succulents and decorations that would look lovely hanging on a tree or sitting out with other holiday decorations.

I’m so excited to get creative with all of the Fireflies this season. If I need to make adjustments to any of the above, I’ll give you a heads up prior to that class in case we need to rearrange.

If Thursday morning doesn’t work for you, then stay tuned. More Autumn Firefly options will be announced soon!

Firefly friends!! I’m getting excited about Fall and holiday programming, as well as, some fun adventures ahead. Firefly turned a year old back in the summer. Before summer is officially over, I’d love to do a look back over the past year.

Will you help me celebrate? If we have planned and dreamed about your gardens together, if you’ve come to a class, bought a kit, popped in for a storytime or any other fun nature/garden activity together… will you comment below or DM me your pictures or thoughts or memories??

Thank you to those who have already shared those pictures and sweet words with me.

🌍🌱 EARTH DAY GIVEAWAY!!!! Friends!!! I’ve been so excited to finally post this! April is such a great month! So in celebration of the month of some of the best days, such as Earth Day, Last Average Frost Day, National Gardening Day, My Birthday (and Todd’s too, I guess lol), let’s do a giveaway!

Themed garden number six!! Salad Bar Garden 🥗! And we’ve got one more to go. This one feels like a pretty standard garden but like the others, let’s talk about a few items that may not be too typical.

Another versatile garden that can be planted in ground, raised bed, containers or maybe even within your landscape?? Lots of the ingredients for this garden prefer cooler temps but a lot are heat tolerant. Really, you could grow a salad bar year round with just adjusting some varieties.

Here are the details:

Veggies 🥗:
- Tomatoes: Cherry varieties are fun for kiddos. One of our favorites is the yellow pear tomato. Prefers warm weather.
- Cucumber: Fast growing and prolific. Will need a trellis or arch for support. Prefers warm weather.
- All of the Greens: Lettuces, bok choy and Swiss chard prefer cooler temps, but spinach and kale can tough out some heat.
- Carrots: Patience is key here but they are so fun!!! Cool and warm temps.
- Radish: These are the quick root veggies. Cool preferred but could handle some heat.
- Sugar Snap peas: Need to be trellised. Prefers cool weather but plus is that they add nitrogen back to the soil for other veggies to use.

Herbs 🌿:
- Chives: It’s a perennial and a big goal is to deter lots of pests, including deer and rabbits.
- Rosemary, Basil, Thyme, Lemon Balm: All of which smell delicious, deter pests and would be amazing in a homemade salad dressing.

Flowers 💐:
- Nasturtiums: An edible flower with a spicy taste that is also pretty and can repel pests.
- Pansy: A pretty edible flower that likes cooler temps.
- Calendula: An herb with a pretty flower that’s edible. Sprinkle petals over a salad to add some color and an anti-inflammatory boost.

Swipe to see pictures of salad bar gardens for inspiration. So what do you think about this themed garden?? Just one more to go!

Phew… y’all… this one was hard for me… mostly because I couldn’t narrow down what I wanted to add! 🤣 Here we are, Themed Garden number 5!!! The Pollinator Garden!

Lots of you guessed it right and we made mini versions at Little Blue House last Thursday.

So here are the details:

This garden can be planted in ground, in a raised bed or even containers. Most plants listed are full sun, 6+ hours of sun.

🌺Flowers:
- Zinnias!!! Easy to grow, pollinators love them.
- Sunflowers: Another easy one to grow and easy for kiddos to handle the seeds to plant.
- Verbena: Perennial plant that comes in all sorts of colors. Generally, heat, drought and deer tolerant. Good one for the busy gardener.
- Coneflower: Perennial, with long stems and is one of Tennessee’s official state wildflowers! (Passion flower is the other wildflower and Iris is the state cultivated flower).
Honorable mentions: Marigolds, lantana, snapdragon, Mexican sunflower, cosmos…

🌿 Herbs:
- Bee balm: It’s a perennial and apart of the mint family but isn’t as aggressive as actual mint (no advisory needed here). Great as a tea.
- Pineapple Sage: Smells LOVELY, can be used in teas (doesn’t really have a pineapple taste though) and pollinators love the gorgeous, red and tall blooms on it.
- Oregano: Another perennial, and as it ages and “goes to flower”, it gives off these lovely soft white flowers that pollinators adore.

Veggies/Fruits 🫘🫐:
- Green beans: Bush varieties do not require support but runner or pole beans may require something to trellis. I added beans here not just to attract pollinators, which their blooms do, but more for the support the plant provides to other plants. Beans add nitrogen back into the soil that other plants can use for chlorophyll production. I gave lots of perennial options and they’ll need nutrients to continue thriving and stay resistant to disease and pests.
- Blueberries: Pollinators love the blooms. People love the fruit 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Add some fun with a diy bee watering station, leave out butterfly nets or hummingbird feeders. Tuck some fairy houses around, leave jars & age appropriate scissors for bouquets.

Themed Garden number 4, the HYDRATION Garden! Which started out as a cocktail/mocktail garden 🍹, but I thought “why stop there”.

My daughter loves adding herbs to her water or orange juice. And with adding more fruits to our garden this year, I’m dreaming of fresh popsicles, infused waters and sweet cocktails 🍸.

Here are the details:

🌿Herbs: (like all of them 🤣, but here are some specific ones)
- Basil
- Thyme
- Mint (see theme #3 for the advisory 🤣)
- Rosemary
- Lemon Balm

Herbs are great pest repellents and beneficial attractors and there are so many variations of each type. Like we have strawberry, apple and chocolate mint growing in the garden.

🌶️🫐 Fruits/Veggies:
- 🍉Watermelon: We haven’t talked about this fruit yet but she is fresh and so hydrating! However, she is not container or small garden friendly (whomp whomp).
- 🫐🍓Berries: Like with the Jam garden, all of the berries are great for this one! Fairly inexpensive and container and raised bed friendly. Think strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and even blackberry.
- 🥒Cucumber: Such a refreshing veggie. Try adding her to infused water or maybe try a Drunk Cucumber 🍸. She is a vining plant so she may need a trellis.

💐Flowers:
- 🌼 Chamomile: Technically an herb but she has sweet edible flower buds that could make a tea. She also repels mosquitoes and attracts beneficials like lady bugs and pollinators.
- 🪻Lavender: see above note for chamomile.
-🌸 Pansies: A pretty edible flower, though she doesn’t love the high heat of summer.
- 🌺 Butterfly Pea: This is a part of the bean family but has the prettiest blooms that can be used for natural dyes or to make colorful drinks. She does really well in the summer heat.

Add some fun with fun shaped popsicle molds and creative drinkware. Or try freezing some of those edible flowers into ice cubes to add to those garden fresh drinks.

So what do you think about this themed garden???
