Our Story
In 2009, one of the owner/pharmacists at Kilgore's Medical Pharmacy had a prescription for adult onset high cholesterol come across her desk...for a six year old kid. She knows that this health problem is diet related and as she walked out to her car to go home later that day, she looked over at the empty lot beside the pharmacy and an incredible idea began to grow.
After talking with the other owner/pharmacists, she reached out to a young organization called the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture to forge a partnership. Their idea was to use the empty lot to grow fresh, organic produce for the kids at the Nora Stewart Early Learning Center. CCUA got excited about the idea too and Kilgore’s Community Garden began to grow.
In the beginning, not a lot of produce was grown but over time, CCUA and Kilgore’s have successfully grown thousands of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables for the school to serve at lunch and for the kids to take home with recipes to share with their families. The project has become about more than just produce and has become a powerful educational tool. CCUA visits the school to teach the kids about plants and eating fresh produce and the kids get to go on field trips to visit the garden.
The garden, right beside one of the busiest roads in the city, has become a lush, urban oasis. Volunteers, guided by members of CCUA meet ever Wednesday evening during the growing season. Come join us!
