I am a huge fan of Alexander Calder's mobiles and stabiles. This mobile is a nod to his work. It has a retro 1950's or 1960's modern or Atomic Ranch vibe to it. For Sale

“Milk Line Harvest” - Wanted to do a pastoral painting en plein air, and found a freshly harvested field of corn behind a small church on the outskirts of Kinards, SC. When I started to draw, the sky was heavy a somewhat gloomy. An hour into my rendering, the sunlight poured onto the field, and soft hues of pink, violet, silky gray, traces of tan and ochre, and shades of brilliant green emerged. I was so surprised and honored when this pastel painting won The Charles Hite Best In Show Award at the Cayce Art Guild’s Still Hopes Juried Show this year. For Sale.

I’m currently working on another painting inspired by our 2019 trip to Paris. After climbing to the top of the Arc de Triomphe, the rain had stopped (see Triumphant Rain oil painting), and the sun was breaking through the clouds to our right. The sky was gorgeous and the light lit up the tower and domes of Sacre Coeur on Montmartre. Using a pointillism technique on this one. From a distance, you cannot see all the tiny dots I’m using to create texture in the piece. But look closely and you’ll see dots, dots, dots and more dots.

This is Whirling Horse, one of the Indians in Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. Such a beautiful face — he captivated me. His original photos can be found on the Library of Congress website under Native American Indian portraits. This is drawn totally freehand and took me just a little more than an hour to complete. It’s drawn on Canson gray drawing paper, 100 #. I used black charcoal pencil, willow charcoal stick and white Conte crayon.

I was at Home Depot one day buying some stuff I needed for a building project and decided to wander across the road to look at Harbison Lake. It was a beautiful day and the lake was calm. I got inspired to convey the peace I felt when I was standing there. So, I drew the scene in pastels. For Sale. Message me for details if interested.

I like to travel throughout South Carolina searching for inspiration for my paintings. One of my excursions took me Great Falls, SC, at the mouth of the Catawba River where it empties into the Great Falls Reservoir at the dam. What I saw there took my breath away. It held an other-worldly quality….I was captured by the light, the sky, the surrounding trees and the receding river that had exposed sand, rock, and solitary cypress stumps standing silently along the bank. The reflections of the water were amazing. The stumps seemed to me to be bravely guarding the river, as if to ensure it remained quiet and peaceful. In homage to that place, I named this painting “Catawba Sentinels.” It is acrylic on canvas, and measures 24” tall x 48” wide. For sale details, please contact me through Messenger.

I’m always experimenting……Decided to create an assemblage with inspiration from Picasso’s techniques. This is called “Counterpoint”. Materials include cork, wooden dowels, fabric, gold foil, corrugated cardboard, acrylic paint, suede fabric, plywood panels, pastels, and even a page torn from my mother-in-law’s “Bach Three-Part Inventions for the Piano” Volume 380 music published by Schirmer. The assemblage is surrounded by a floating frame I also constructed from plywood. Available for purchase.

I’m fascinated by photos of Native Americans, many of which can be found within The Library of Congress’s archives. The expressions and lines in each face reflect character and nobility. “Crow Bull Chief” depicts one such warrior. I decided to sharpen my portrait skills using charcoal and white conte crayon to draw his likeness. He is from the Asparoke Tribe of theCrow People in Southern Montana. Photo was by Edward S. Curtis taken in 1908. Asparoke means “People of the Large-Beaked Bird.” Drawing won 3rd Place in the Professional Division of the SC State Fair 2022. Available for sale.

Last weekend, April 28-30, I visited Lake City, SC, for the 11th Annual ArtFields event. Artists from all over the Southeast participate, and my sculpture “Beam Reach” was fortunate enough to be selected for the show. This sculpture is a visual tribute to the skill of single-handed sailing — beam reach being the most coveted point-of-sal. The ability to read the wind, waves and sails, can propel the advanced sailor to achieve speeds ove the water that are nothing short of astonishing. In this work, the mainsail is completely filled, drawing the eye toward an imaginary wind, while the jib, in constant motion, sways silently to and fro, as if it were a pendulum. Finally, the floating sun reminds viewers that sailing is an ever-changing dynamic, interweaving wind, water, sails and skill. Beautiful in its simplicity, “Beam Reach” applies a level of abstraction that evokes a powerful, elegant ad pleasing aesthetic response.

A detailed section of my oil painting “Triumphant Rain” showing reflections in the street and on the sidewalk caused from a gloomy, foggy and damp October evening in Paris at the Arc de Triomphe. I enjoy the pops of color I added that make you wonder where the people in the the composition are going. Are they headed home? Out to dinner? On the way to a movie or to see a play? What do you think?
