One year ago today, I lost my dad.
My mom lost her husband.
My aunt lost her last remaining sibling.
Our family lost its patriarch.
Our crews lost their leader.
Many lost a friend.
And Columbia lost its favorite fence guy.
No one prepares you for losing a parent. And there were certainly no how-to guides that came with running FBD.
During my dad’s hospital stay, he refused to wear a hospital gown and wore an FBD t-shirt until his last breath.
You could argue he worked too much (I saw it firsthand), but I also think it’s a sign of his character and how much love he poured into his business and the Howard County community.
For my dad, it was never just a fence. He loved the people—he loved you. He adored his crews. He loved leaving something behind. And now, more so than ever before, I can say I understand.
There have been many lessons this year. In trust, learning, resilience, and change.
Thank you, to everyone in Howard County, for placing your trust in me as my dad’s daughter and only child.
Thank you to our crews for always supporting me, teaching me, and making me laugh along the way.
Thank you to our vendors and suppliers for preserving our relationships and helping me keep this thing going.
Thank you to our customers for wanting to learn more about me, my dad’s story—our story.
If my dad touched your life in any way over the years—through a fence, an estimate, or over a glass of wine— I hope you think of him today and smile.
