We are setup and ready to start the CTI test in Galena, IL.

This test will start promptly at 7:09 (not a typo) and end at 4:00. This is a comprehensive basic skills test for tile installation methods and techniques. I earned my CTI in May of 2017, and became an evaluator earlier this year. This will be my first solo evaluation. , I’m pretty excited to get started!

We are at Coverings this week and I’m fulfilling my requirements to be an evaluator for the CTI test. This is the hands on portion of the Certified Tile Installer (CTI) program. The purpose behind this program is to have a third party evaluate the workmanship and quality of tile installers. This is a basic skills test. We are testing against industry standards and practices for tile layout, substrate preparation, mortar coverage, movement joints and several other key elements. I earned my CTI (1329) in 2017. I would love to see more Certified Tile Installers in our area. If you know a tile installer, have them get in touch with me. I would love to talk with them about the program and get them certified. .

I earned my CTI (Certified Tile Installer #1329) certification in 2017. I would love to see more certified installers in our area.

This shower was definitely leaking. Your friendly neighborhood tile guy here with a few more job pictures of the shower we are replacing. This installer attempted to do a divot method installation of a liquid applied waterproofing. None of the corner waterproofing was installed correctly, no corners held together at all as the tile and backerboard was removed. The curb and bench lumber was very saturated and moldy. The bench top had concrete backerboard installed directly to the framing, there was no solid plywood under it. It’s very frustrating to a homeowner to hire a contractor to do a job and not have that job installed correctly. How can you protect yourself from a similar situation? That is the real question.

Your friendly neighborhood tile guy here with another project we’re starting on. We will be removing this tile shower and floor because the homeowner has unfortunately discovered that it is leaking into the storage room below. We will post updated pictures of the project as we start to remove it and see what happened. The new tile shower will have a curbless entry, heated floor and a lifetime warranty! Stay tuned for updates. Remember, with great tile comes great responsibility. .
