pendant sizing over an island isn’t just a guess

the go-to formula: add the length + width of your island in inches, that number in inches roughly equals the total diameter you want your pendants (combined) to cover

but formulas are a starting point, not a rule. sometimes a larger scale linear chandelier makes a bigger statement than a row of pendants. sometimes a few small flush mounts read cleaner if your ceilings are lower or your island is more of a prep zone than a hangout spot

the real answer: know the rule, then trust your eye

repeat after me: we hire the designer at the same time as the architect 🎙️

by the time the floor plans are “final,” it’s already too late to fix the stuff that actually makes a house feel good. window placement for furniture layout, ceiling heights, where the outlets land, whether the pantry can fit how you actually cook. all of that gets decided in the architecture phase, not the decorating phase.

bringing a designer in from day one means we’re solving those problems together instead of me working around them later. it saves money, it saves timeline, and it means the finished house actually functions the way you live.

if you’re building or doing a major addition, this is your sign to loop in your designer before the plans are locked.

the formula i use on every single project to size a light fixture 📏

add the length + width of your room in feet, then convert to inches. that’s your ideal chandelier or pendant diameter.

example: 19ft x 18ft room = 37 inches, so you want a fixture around 37” wide

this one simple trick saves you from the tiny fixture floating in a huge room mistake (we’ve all seen it happen)
