We are super excited to share these two awesome pieces from local craftsman Dan Back!
FIRST PIECE
Industrial workbench console with military armor box.
price $1699
This is a great example of industrial chic. It tells a story. The top has genuine character from past use, while the metal cabinet keeps it functional and edgy. It’s perfect for someone who loves blending old and new.
Age of Components
• The metal drawer cabinet and legs likely date from the mid-20th century—probably from the 1940s or 1950s when these steel shop cabinets were common.
• Thick wood top is likely reclaimed or added later, giving it a rustic workbench wood.
Key Features
• Metal drawer bank: These small metal drawers were likely used for hardware or tool storage, giving it an industrial, utilitarian character.
• Reclaimed wood top: Thick, worn wood that’s been repurposed as a work surface, adding warmth and history.
• Iron legs and slatted shelf: The iron frame and lower wood shelf combine industrial sturdiness with a touch of warmth.
What Makes It Stand Out
• The contrast between the rugged metal drawer front and the warm, well-worn wood top.
• The functional history of the piece—it feels like it once belonged in an old workshop or factory but now has a new life.
SECOND PIECE
This is a C. Christiansen antique woodworking workbench, chicago, Illinois. This isn’t just “old furniture”—it’s a working craftsman’s bench that survived 100+ years. Pieces like this are getting harder to find in this condition with original hardware intact. Late 1800s to early 1900s
Price $1200
What makes yours stand out
• The maker’s tag (Chicago origin = legit craftsmanship era)
• The compact cabinet base (many old benches are just legs)
• The clean proportions—this could easily be used as:
• Kitchen island
• Retail display
• Statement furniture piece
Key features (this is where it gets interesting)
Dual vises (both ends)
• You’ve got two large wooden screw vises
• Used to clamp boards for planing, cutting, or joinery
• That alone makes it more desirable—many benches only have one
Built-in storage
• Multiple drawers + cabinet
• Designed for working tradesmen, not decoration
• Everything had a place—tools, chisels, planes
Thick solid top
• That top is serious hardwood (likely maple or beech)
• Built to take decades of abuse (and clearly has)
Patina & wear
• The wear marks are actually a good thing
• Shows real use—collectors love that authenticity
