Water does something unusual when it freezes. It expands by about 9 percent.
It's the same reason a forgotten bottle cracks in the freezer. Inside a concrete porch, water trapped in the pores freezes, expands, and pushes outward against the concrete around it. The damage starts small: hairline cracks, a little flaking at the surface.
The problem is that it repeats every time the temperature drops below 32. Seal the surface with epoxy and coat with polyaspartic coating and that water never gets inside to expand. Nothing inside to freeze means nothing inside to crack.
