This 1920s Tudor Revival home underwent a number of renovation projects over the years, resulting in an awkward, uncoordinated design. BSD’s major renovation of the house brought interior and exterior details together in a design that is respectful of the original era of the home and gracious for large- and small-scale entertaining by a university president.

The dramatic great hall now has leaded bay windows all around, wood detailing to compliment the original home and ceiling finishes that are reminiscent of historic Tudor structures. The main kitchen was designed with highly functional, professional appliances yet with the look and feel of a kitchen original to the house.

The rich, wood and marble master bath features an “invisible” television that appears in the mirror only when it is in use. Each guest suite was designed with comfort and privacy in mind for visiting guests and university dignitaries.

The original oak paneling in the library and public spaces was restored to enhance the wood’s patina. Changes were made to exterior terraces and walkways to allow various-sized groups to flow easily from the home to the beautifully landscaped grounds.

Private Residence

Description
Tucked onto a small, sloping ravine lot in Upper Arlington, this new stone-and-slate house was designed to appear as if the trees had grown up around it over the years.

The elegant, enclosed entrance hall leads to a surprisingly open first floor, with a warm and inviting kitchen at its center. The kitchen has furniture-finished cabinets and brushed-granite countertops and is surrounded by an intimate eating and cozy fireplace area on one side and a larger living and dining space on the other. Distressed hickory flooring, wood ceiling beams, wrought iron overlook and space designed specifically for prized antiques create a ground for the open plan and large windows of the space.

A first floor master suite, office and laundry room make one-floor living totally convenient. With guest spaces up and a second office and large television room below, this home can accommodate visiting guests as well as the empty nesters using it on a daily basis.

This historic Upper Arlington home was stately but too small for the needs of the new owners. The house had been well restored but never adapted to modern family life. Two brick wings were designed to balance the symmetrical front façade, creating an open breakfast room, kitchen and family room zone on one end of the house and a more private den on the other end. On the second floor, the 1 3/4-story additions allowed for an expanded child’s bedroom area on one end and an expanded master suite on the other end. Closely matched brick and slate, as well as attention to the original exterior trim and porch detailing, helped to create a seamless addition.

The kitchen features authentic cabinet detailing; a patina-finished metal hood; a thick, walnut island top and original Singer Sewing Machine factory stools

This New Albany Farms home was designed to look at home on its fifteen-acre “farm” site. The central section of this Georgian house appears as a historic structure that was added onto over many years. The mostly brick composition evolves into less formal “additions,” and ultimately, into a board-and-batten garage and barn.

The large, main living space is anchored by a handsome, built-in cabinet (with television) at one end and the kitchen at the other end. A series of south-facing French doors along the length of the space bathe it in natural light.

The central, coffered gallery provides a strong link between the rooms, and a natty bar creates a surprise when it is opened to form a nook in the long hallway.

All the many rooms and spaces in the house combine to give a natural elegance that you would expect to find in a stately Georgian home, yet they are relaxed through the choice of finished details and materials to make living in the twenty-first century seem natural and easy.
