Aetna Integrated Services Community Garden

Aetna Integrated Services Community Garden Community Garden The garden provides a community gathering space with the potential to serve as a place for art, gardening classes, and horticultural therapy.

The AetnaIS Community Garden is a productive garden that provides community members with the opportunity to grow fresh produce while learning about the benefits of urban agriculture. In addition, the garden increases the amount of green space available for nearby residents as well as the children and families at the Ronald McDonald House and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

With the upcoming planting season we would like to have a prosperous crop. The past two years we have unfortunately battled with crop theft. While most of our gardeners are more than willing to share with each other and the community this does not excuse the theft that has occurred. We completely understand the frustration of nurturing a garden only to have someone else clean out of the bounty. We would like to hear thoughts on how to resolve this ongoing issue and possible solutions to help deter it. Please feel free to comment or send a private message we appreciate everyone's feedback.

Spring is only 55 days away. Which means planting season is also right around the corner. We found this article about cool weather crops that we thought would be great to share with all of our wonderful gardeners.

Saint Patrick's Day in mid March is the traditional go-ahead date for planting early spring crops. These include broccoli, cabbage, leeks, onion, peas, radishes, shallots, spinach and turnip. These plants are resistant to light frost but do not do well when prolonged periods of warm weather set in, so it is unwise to wait until all danger of frost has passed as you must do with other crops. Second plantings of these crops will mature before the first killing frost if planted in late summer when evening temperatures have begun to drop.
