2026 Garden… now in progress!
The weather is changing and we finally see the sun. If you are like me and are ready to start your garden, but are still down by the chill, you can get started on your cut flower garden THIS WEEKEND!

Poppies require periods of cold stratification in order to grow, making late February a great time to direct sow your seeds outdoors. The only thing these seeds need are a little chill, direct contact with damp soil, and access to full sun.

Ohio gardeners should seek varieties of Shirley poppy for cut flowers as this variety responds best to our growing climate. Bread seed poppy varieties also germinate well in Ohio and are the only edible poppy seeds- great for everything bagel seasoning and baking.
If you are waiting until March to start your poppy, it is recommended to store your seeds in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks before direct sowing on soil.
Poppy have very delicate root systems and do not like transplanting, so head to your local garden center and drop your seeds on your dirt today!

If you’re willing to put in the work, seeds can be a one- time purchase. Last summer, I cut and dried these sunflower heads to grow in seasons to come. While this seed packet only yielded about 10 sunflower plants, drying the heads will allow me to grow as many as I want for years to come.
Dwarf sunflowers are a great choice for sunflower lovers who enjoy cut flowers. These plants produce a beautiful, bright sunflower without the 10ft tall stalk. Bonus points for this flower variety because its seeds are still edible! I love growing plants that have multiple uses: medicinal, edible, beautiful!

Sunflower seeds take a while to mature (maturity is when they produce a flower). Plan ahead if you would like mid-summer blooms!
- Propagate seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before last frost.
- Germination 7-14 days
- Days to maturity: 75-90

Vanilla extract is made with 2 simple ingredients: vanilla beans and 80- proof vodka, bourbon, or rum. For this batch, I am using vodka as it is closest to standard baking extract.

- Identify how many cups of liquor your storage container holds- these bottles hold 2 cups (16 oz) of liquid.
- Slice and open 4-8 vanilla beans per cup of liquor in the bottle. I used 7 beans per cup (14 per bottle).
- Add the vanilla beans first, then pour the liquor over top.
- Seal, shake, and label with the bottling date.
- Set an alarm to shake your extract weekly.
- For best flavor, begin using after 6-12 months. Continue to shake after use has started.

Brown glass is recommended for storage, but you can use any tight- sealing jar or bottle on your pantry!

Garlic lovers assemble.
It’s not be too late to get yummy garlic cloves started for next year! Ohio has ideal planting conditions for Hardneck Garlic as this variety of garlic loves the winter chill for cloves to grow into big, separated bulbs!
Soak your separated cloves for 2-4 hours in a mixture of 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 1 quart of water.
Dig a 3-4 inch deep hole in a location with loose workable soil; consider adding a small handful of compost to the mix.
Cover your cloves with soil/ compost mix and top your soil off with a layer of mulch, straw, leaves, or wood chips as an added layer of weather protection.
Make a few cups of hot cocoa and wait for you garlic to sprout in the spring!

Homemade bread does not have to be unattainable!
Everyone loves a fresh loaf of bread, but learning where to start can feel overwhelming. Try this simple, 6 ingredient bread recipe- half of the ingredients you probably already have in your pantry!

Ingredients:
3 cups flour
1.5 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon instant dry yeast
1.5 cups of water- HOT
6 jalepenos roughly chopped
1 small block of grated cheese

Mix the dry ingredients, add water, then add cheddar and jalepeno. Cover with parchment in a warm location for 3 hours. Bake at 450 in a covered Dutch oven that has been preheating with the oven. Bake for 30 min, remove the lid, and bake an additional 12 minutes.

What an evening! Cul-de-sac Crop partnered with Adams Pointe Apartments to launch our inagural “Crop Shop” series with their amazing residents. Participants trialed our scent menus- assembling curated simmer pots to enjoy in their homes. As always, we encouraged creativity, allowing residents to also create their own unique simmer scents.

Simmer Pot Instructions:
- Fill a medium sauce pan or small pot half full with water.
- Add your favorite ingredients.
- Leave your pot uncovered.
- Bring to a gentle boil.
- Reduce heat to a simmer.
- Add water as needed, and enjoy in your home throughout the day!

Crop Shop sessions are a mixture of instruction and hands- on “making”, empowering our suburban gardeners to make and grow with limited space. Our simmer pot workshop is one of many workshops coming straight from our Cul-de-sac to you. Stay tuned to see more from today’s session- and to learn about sessions to come!
And finally, we are sending so much gratitude and thanks to Adam’s Pointe Apartments, Mikey Mocek, and all our new friends who participated today. Thank you for believing in our small business and helping us hard launch our dreams!

Let’s talk lavender. 💜
It’s time to prune your lavender before the winter season. Fall is not the time for aggressive lavender pruning, but trimming away flowers and long stems is recommended so your plant can focus on conserving energy versus producing flowers before the winter season.
Lavender will go dormant over winter and sometimes even grey. Your plant should start producing new shoots in April- May, but may be a little slower to wake up than your other spring- loving plants, so don’t assume it’s dead!
