9 Plants better than dandelions for early season pollinators! How many of these do you have in your yard?

Thanks for making a great graphic Heather Holm Bee and Pollinator Books by Heather Holm

This is the time of year when people post about the virtues of dandelions helping bees in spring so I'm reposting this graphic I created last spring. Native bees need native plant diversity; dandelions alone don't do the job of providing native bees with all the nutritional food sources they need. Plant these early flowering native plants to support native bees. The plants featured on the graphic include several host plants for pollen-collecting specialists.

Berries are a main good source for adult birds. There are some wonderful native plants that produce berries that birds love. Which of the species below do you have in your yard?

Thanks Healthy Yards for the wonderful graphic!

It took thousands of years for our native wildlife species to adapt and create the relationships they need for survival. That is why native berries contain exactly the right nutrients to support the native birds in that same habitat. Not all non-natives are bad, but if you plant a new shrub or tree, please make it a native one. Below are examples of berries native to the Northeast of America. For a more precise overview of these species, and to find those (buckthorn and beauty berry for example) that are native to your eco region, and whether you should leave or remove pokeweed visit: https://plants.usda.gov/
