One of my favorite parts of owning a plant shop is that there is almost always something interesting happening if you stop long enough to look. 🌿

A strange growth habit. A ridiculous texture. New growth appearing where you didn’t expect it. A plant quietly becoming much cooler than it was a week ago.

Sometimes I walk through the shop intending to actually work… and instead I end up stopping every few feet because LOOK AT THIS. 😂

So here are a few things that caught my eye around Verde Haven lately.

Plants are weird. Plants are fascinating. And I will apparently never get tired of showing you the cool things they do. 💚

There’s rain… and then there’s RAIN YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR. 🌧️🌿

After a couple of months without any real rain to speak of, things outside were starting to look tired, dry and very ready for a drink.

So today, I’m perfectly content to stand at the front window of the shop and watch it come down.

The plants needed this. The ground needed this. And I think maybe we needed it, too. 💚

Sometimes a rainy afternoon is something to be grateful for. 🌧️🌱

Never underestimate the little guy. 🌱👀

This tiny Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa may not look terribly intimidating just yet…

…but give it time. ☀️

➡️ THIS is what it grows into.

Big, chunky pitchers. Deep reds. Gorgeous veining. And a whole lot more attitude. 😂

One of my favorite things about growing plants from starters is knowing what’s hiding inside that tiny pot. With plenty of sun, the right water, and a little patience, that baby pitcher plant can become an absolutely spectacular specimen.

Plants are a long game sometimes.

But THAT glow-up is worth the wait. 🌿❤️

Every once in a while, you find something you weren’t expecting to find. 🌿

I rarely come across plants like Pearcea hypocyrtiflora outside of a dedicated plant or flower show, so finding this one at Reptilian Nation Expo last weekend felt a little like stumbling onto a treasure.

There was no question—I brought it home.

Now I’m looking forward to learning what makes it happy and, hopefully, someday seeing those extraordinary blooms for myself.

I’m grateful for people like the folks at , who have an eye for the unusual and make it possible for the rest of us to discover something special. 💚

Thank you for the incredibly warm welcome at Reptilian Nation Expo this weekend!

To everyone who stopped at our booth, talked plants with us, asked questions, shared stories about your animals and enclosures, took a plant (or five 😉) home, or simply stopped to say hello—thank you.

Bringing Verde Haven into the reptile and bioactive world has been something I’ve been working toward for a while, and seeing so much excitement for the plants and what we’re building made this weekend incredibly special.

We came home tired, inspired, grateful…and with considerably fewer plants. 😂🌿

Thank you, San Antonio, for making our first Reptilian Nation Expo such a wonderful experience.

You made us feel right at home. 💚

Now…time to start growing more plants. 🌱😂

The tiny dinosaurs have spoken. 🦖🌿

Verde Haven is headed to Reptilian Nation Expo in San Antonio this weekend! 🦎🐸🦀

We’ve been propagating, potting, growing and generally turning the shop into a small jungle in preparation—and now it’s finally time to pack it all up and take it to the show!

We’ll be bringing a HUGE selection of plants for terrariums, vivariums, paludariums, bioactive enclosures and arid setups, from tiny ground covers and humidity lovers to climbers, epiphytes, carnivorous plants and plenty of weird little treasures. 🌿

Come find us at the Reptilian Nation Expo at Freeman Expo Hall in San Antonio, August 29–30.

And if you’ve never been to a reptile expo before, come anyway. Seriously. There will be reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, planted enclosures, supplies and all kinds of fascinating things to see.

The Verde Haven storefront will be CLOSED Friday, Saturday & Sunday while we take the jungle on the road.

Okay, this one is mine. 😍🌿

Meet Sinningia leucotricha, a plant I have wanted in my personal collection for a LONG time—and she was absolutely worth the wait.

First, can we talk about those leaves?! They’re covered in the most incredible silvery fuzz and are genuinely as soft as bunny ears. 🐰 The contrast between that soft silver foliage and those little coral-orange tubular flowers is just ridiculous.

And underneath all that fluff is the part that makes this plant even stranger: a big, round tuber—often called a caudex by collectors—that gets larger and more impressive with age. Mine is already about 3–4 inches across, but this is very much a long-game plant. A truly brag-worthy old specimen takes years to develop.

Which, naturally, makes me want one even more. 😂

In the wild, Sinningia leucotricha comes from southern Brazil, where it grows on rocky outcrops and cliffs. It’s a member of the Gesneriad family, but instead of behaving like the leafy tropicals we usually picture, it stores resources in that chunky tuber and can shed its above-ground growth during its resting period, only to grow again from the tuber later.

And perhaps my favorite bit of plant trivia?

In Brazil it’s known as Rainha-do-Abismo — “Queen of the Abyss” — a reference to its habit of growing along rocky cliffs.

I mean… bunny-soft leaves, a giant potato-looking tuber, orange flowers AND a name like Queen of the Abyss?

Obviously I needed one. 😂

I’m also deliberately leaving the spent flowers alone in hopes that I might get seed. Self-pollination isn’t necessarily easy with this species, so we’ll see whether she cooperates. If she does, I’ll be attempting to grow some from seed—and then beginning the very, very long wait for those babies to develop impressive tubers of their own.

Some plants are instant gratification.

This is not one of them. 😂

But I think that’s part of what makes growing something like this so special. 🌿🧡

Both of these are Sarracenia ‘Scarlet Belle’—but they’re at very different points in their journey.

The little one in front is a recently potted starter plant. The one behind it? That’s what happens when ‘Scarlet Belle’ gets established and spends some quality time doing what Sarracenia absolutely LOVE to do:

Bask in the sun. ☀️

With strong light, the pitchers develop those incredible reds, pinks and intricate veining—and the whole plant becomes fuller, stronger and dramatically more colorful.

It’s one of my favorite things about growing plants: sometimes that tiny, slightly underwhelming starter sitting in a pot is hiding a ridiculously beautiful future self.

Give it the right conditions and a little time…and let the plant show you what it can do. 🌿❤️

And yes. These really are the same variety. 😂

In all seriousness, there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for why roughly 400 plants are currently under plastic in the middle of my shop. 😂 The plastic is helping keep humidity high while these beauties get settled, rooted, and ready for what’s coming next…

🥁 Verde Haven is officially headed to Reptilian Nation Expo in San Antonio! 🦎🐸🦀🌿

We’ll be vending at the Freeman Expo Hall August 29–30, and when I pull back the plastic “veil,” you’re looking at around 400 of the plants already being prepared for the show.

And that’s only a little over half of what I’m planning to bring. 👀

My goal is to show up with an incredible variety of plants for different types of planted enclosures—from tiny ground covers and creeping plants to climbers, epiphytes, tropical foliage and plenty of unusual little treasures.

I want you to be able to walk into our booth with a vision for your terrarium, vivarium or paludarium and leave with plants that let you make it completely your own. 🌿

So yes, things look a little suspicious around here at the moment.

But I promise… it’s just plants. 🔪🌱😂
