"That's a lot of money....I might as well replace them"

That's a common take when looking into professional grade cabinet refinishing...but there are 2 things to keep in mind.

1. The cost and timeline of replacing cabinets snowballs quickly. Demo, cabinets, installation....not to mention any counters, appliances, trim or flooring modifications that become necessary. IT ADDS UP 😞

✅ Fact: professionally finished cabinets require a fraction of the time and cost vs replacements.

2. The quality of you existing wood cabinets is likely far better than the news ones you will purchase. In recent days manufactured wood like MDF/HDF and soft wood species are the standard for replacement cabinets. They are less resilience to abrasion and moisture that your oak or maple cabinets. KEEP THEM IF YOU CAN!

✅ Fact: your existing hardwood cabinets will outlast modern paint grade cabinets.

Stained wood can be a beautiful and timeless look...but it demands a more specialized and consequential process than your average paint job

Here are 3 elements that are absolutely critical when handling custom stain projects like this remodel in the Berkeley Hills

✅ Preparation: when preparing wood for stain the sanding must be done aggressively enough to remove invisible oils that will prevent even absorption...but it also must be done with a fine grit finish to prevent visible scratches in the wood.

Once the wood is properly sanded, soft woods like these Douglas fir doors require a quality wood conditioner to minimize blotchiness

✅ Color matching/sampling: over time oil based stains, clear coats and the wood itself will change color. Different cuts of wood will stain differently and different clear products will affect the stain colors differently. On top of that, once a wood surface has been finished it's a lot harder to change than a paint color. Make sure to get samples and take your time before approving a final product.

✅ Fire prevention: All contractors have heard horror stories about fires on job sites....and stain rags may very well be the leading culprit. We once worked for a customer who set their own garage on fire not once but twice in a one year time frame. The cause? Stain rags in a garbage can. The highest level of care must be taken at every step of the process to properly contain rags, brushes and any other saturated debris.

Another full house cabinet transformation in downtown .

Hot Take: Do you have oak cabinets? Unless you are completely changing the layout or style please don't replace them with paint grade cabinets. Paint grade cabinets are typically a combination of soft wood and manufactured material like MDF. Neither are ideal for moisture exposure, heavy use or regular cleaning.

Prepared professionally, your painted oak cabinets will outlast new cabinets by many years.

We are back with another round of improvements for a wonderful client in San Ramon. This living room, part of phase one, got transformed with fresh paint and a shiplap accent wall a few years ago....now it's time to update bathrooms and their sons bedroom.

Francisco and the team have been watching the sunrise from downtown Pleasant Hill this week.

In the process of refreshing the exterior of Paris Baguette we discovered some pretty significant issues with failed delaminating stucco. We quickly alerted the property manager and are helping to recruit a plastering company to complete an evaluation and offer a viable solution.

Unfortunately, looking out for our customers best interests sometimes leaves us to bear bad news. When that happens we go to great lengths to support our customers to the finish line.

We have been working on this beautiful home renovation in the Oakland hills for a couple of months, painting select portions of new construction and existing surfaces throughout 3 stories of historic home. This project involves matching aging finishes in areas, hand brushing extensive new cabinetry to deliver a classical "tipped" style and stripping and restoring areas of paint failure.
