National Fire News: March 20, 2026. The National Preparedness Level has increased to 2 (PL 2) as fire activity begins to expand across multiple geographic areas.

This step reflects a familiar seasonal shift. In both February and March, PL 2 has historically marked the point where activity becomes more coordinated at a national level, even if overall demand for resources remains manageable.

Jefferson County is updating its defensible space and structure hardening standards to meet new State requirements under the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code. These updates will affect Zoning Resolution Section 39, Building Code Appendix Z, and the County’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Overlay Map.

In their upcoming meeting, they’ll review the draft changes and attendees will be able to ask questions. The meeting will be recorded and posted on the Planning & Zoning Regulation Updates webpage.

Tis the season for pile burning!

You'll see us around, as long as we have enough snow on the ground, burning piles for our clients.

Pile burning is a great option for those who:

•Want ecological benefits? Pile burning helps return nutrients to the soil, reduces pest habitat, and supports healthier forest structure. It also removes ladder fuels that contribute to high-severity wildfires, helping maintain more resilient ecosystems.
•Need to reduce biomass? If you’ve recently completed thinning or defensible space work, pile burning is an efficient way to safely dispose of excess woody debris, especially when chipping isn’t feasible.
•Are looking for cost-effective solutions? Compared to hauling material off-site or renting heavy equipment, pile burning is often the most affordable method for managing slash, especially on larger properties.

Have a safe Holiday Season!

Neighbors, based on today's snowfall, Denver Mountain Parks (DMP) may conduct pile burning south of North Turkey Creek Road and east of Danks Drive on 12/4. Weather forecasts are optimal for fair smoke dispersal, but some smoke may be visible. DMP wildland firefighters will be on site throughout the operation.

The pile burning is part of a 29-acre thinning project on DMP land that created slash piles back in 2021.

This photo, from a private mitigation company in our community, shows what pile burning looks like with proper snow on the ground.
