As a long time pet parent and veterinary architect for over 30 years, we understand the importance of creating spaces that are efficient for your staff, clients, and the unique needs of your furry friends. Like us, animals also experience stress when encountering veterinary spaces that can be unfamiliar to them. Which is why designing waiting rooms that have comfortable seating, natural light, and soothing colors, can help ease some of that anxiety. We also consider layouts where it's easy for staff to navigate from treatment to exam rooms, so your pet can be seen quickly and efficiently. Jeffrey L. The first step in designing a animal facility is to determine the location. Will you be building an addition to an existing clinic, renovating an existing building of a different use, or constructing something brand-new from the ground up? If you have not yet chosen a site, some important factors to consider are zoning regulations, soil conditions, and surrounding demographic. Check to see if your site is zoned to accommodate a veterinary business and a building of the scale you need. If not, you may be able to get variances, but that adds time to the overall design process. Consider connections to utilities, setback requirements, and impervious coverage. Will this site allow you to build more than one story, if that is what you need? Will it accommodate the necessary amount of parking? The site should ideally be as flat as possible, and it is advisable to steer clear of wetlands, river, or streams. Make sure you are in an area that is near clientele and far from too much competition. A market analysis may be worth your time. Avoid being too close to residential areas, as residents often complain about noise and traffic associated with a veterinary business.

Cats and dogs have better hearing than you, meaning that sounds in an unknown environment such as kennels and veterinary hospitals might cause them more stress.

Jeffrey L. Grogan Architects can help you tackle noise issues even before you start to build your project. We think about materials that absorb sound in windows, doors, and in ceilings. At the design stage, we can consider the layout of the dog runs and divide large areas into smaller areas, use sound batt insulation in all walls and above ceilings as buffer zones, which will help provide a quieter environment in the actual kennel area.

Here at Jeffrey L. Grogan Architects, we consider the emotional and psychological well being of pets using fear free design for veterinary facilities. From floor materials, ceiling heights (of dog kennels), acoustics, colors, each component is carefully considered. Using these elements in design leads to less stress and anxiety for animals. Calmer and happier animals lead to better physical and behavioral health.

This creates a positive and welcoming experience not only for visitors, but also for your staff and furry companions.

When you're renovating or building from scratch most people may not know this, but the first step after you have a building site or building to be renovated is preliminary design, after design, you’ll need a set of contract documents.

So what are contract documents?

Contract documents for building construction are legally binding, written, and graphic documents that define the project scope, roles, responsibilities, and terms between an owner and contractor. These documents are usually needed in your permit application and also need to be signed and sealed by a professional licensed architect.

Who prepares these contract documents?

These professionals include interior designers, architects, civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering.

What's actually included in the contract documents?

A set of contract documents contains dimensions, materials, details of construction, building code elements, site plans, floor plans, elevations, sections, and technical specifications and much more, as required for construction permits.

Why is it the most important document in your construction project?

The contract documents are a legally binding contract. It outlines the terms, scope, timeline, costs, and responsibilities of all parties involved, ensuring clear expectations and legal protections throughout your project.

This summary of contract documents is a snippet of what it actually entails. The actual process of creating these documents may vary depending from project to project.

Hot off the press we got new brochures showcasing kennels and SPCAs.

Kennels and humane shelters deserve more than function—they deserve intention. For SPCAs, humane societies, and no-kill shelters, thoughtful design supports animal health, reduces stress, and creates welcoming spaces for connection and adoption. We consider light, airflow, acoustics, and durable materials and more in our architectural designs to create spaces for both you and your furry companions.

We know that when veterinary teams feel supported, the hospital runs better. That’s why we focus on creating work environments where all staff can feel comfortable, focused, and cared for. Our designs include inviting staff lounges, relaxing break areas, and comfortable workstations that make it easier to recharge and stay on top of a busy day. By putting the needs of veterinary staff first, we help them do what they do best—provide excellent care for their patients while also taking care of themselves.
