It is national take your seedlings to work day here at Let's Get Growing. I am in the process of hardening off some winter-hardy seedlings for planting in the next few days.

Hardening off is the process of taking those sheltered veggie pants from the comforts of the indoors and letting them get accustomed to the harshness of outside living conditions. Two of the main concerns is UV light and temperatures. By letting the tender plants outside for a couple hours at first and building the amount of time outdoors by a couple of hours each day lets them acclimatize to the surroundings. That in turn, hopefully, makes for a successful transplant.

Going in the ground tomorrow will be English Peas, and lettuce. By next week going in will be broccoli, cabbages and Collards. More than likely carrot seeds will be started as well.

This is what you do after a week of doing nothing from being snowed in. What is this you might ask? It is homemade seed tape. Tiny seeds are difficult to sow but by using toilet paper you can space out your seeds before you plant. Simply take tp and lay out your spacing, then mix up a simple paste of water and flour and apply dots of glue on to the tp. Then taking a wooden skewer, you wet that sharp end and dip in your seeds. Then you just touch the seed to the glue and it’s stuck on your seed tape.

These happen to be 2 varieties of carrot seed. That, when ready to plant simply work the soil, lay the tp tape on the ground and cover with soil.

Feb 17th 2021. Heavy snow continues with temps in the teens. So it will be a while before the ground will be suitable for planting. I took that opportunity to put some English pea seeds into 3 in cups for starters. These should be ready to transplant in 2-3 weeks hopefully by then the weather will also be ready for the transplants.

Here is a picture of the seedlings I’ve all started so far. Eggplant, peppers, brassicas. Tomatoes get seeded next week.

This is why the English peas won’t get planted on the 16th. Plus on the 16th another winter storm is moving in. Weather man screwed it up again....the 8-10 was supposed to be east of Little Rock. Not west.

It’s cold and only going to get colder. I wanted to start my English peas on Monday 2-16 but it isn’t going to happen. The lows are forecast to be near zero, highs low 20s and snow. Not sure how much snow but anything measurable will be more than we’ve had in 3 years.

Snow actually isn’t bad. The snow will actually be a insulation for the ground inhibiting deep freezing.

February can be a month of really cold winter weather, or the beginning of tornado season with storms......winter is winning right now.

Someone help me I am addicted to Tomato seeds. No less than 14 varieties that I will soon be germinating. Everywhere from 4 varieties of "Cherry" which are some of our favorites to munch on right off the vine. Then I will have some large beefsteak heirlooms in every color from black, purple, red, yellow and Green. It is going to be an interesting tomato crop this coming year.

More seeds started. This time it was egg plant and 3 different varieties of lettuce. I’ve always been challenged to grow eggplant in my garden, so this year it will go in my raised beds. The lettuce is a fast grower and the varieties planted were a butter crunch, a red leaf and a Romine.

Also started sweet potato planting for slips to plant in the garden. It’s supposed to be easy, plop the tators in some starting mix, and place in a warm darkish area....aka my half bathroom. Once the potatoes sprout they should send up vines, called shoots. When the shoots are 5-6 inches long, they are cut from the seed potato and then placed in a glass of water for a week or so to generate roots. Planting time here for those are May, so you have to start Some 3 months early to get the slips. Then they have to grow in the garden at least if not longer than 100 days.

Things are starting to "GROW" into FEB. These peppers were started indoors on JAN. 19th. Took some 10-12 days for germination. Placed them on top of a heating pad to help get them going. Today Feb 1st I will start some eggplants from Seed, and get some sweet potatoes in some starting mix to propagate "Slips" for planting come May.

Monday, Jan 25. An unusually warm day after a warm front swings north. Highs in the 70s and it’s muggy. It won’t last long highs in the 30s come Wednesday.

Pepper seeds planted on the 19 have yet to germinate. Peppers are hard to germinate, they need warm soil and warm temps. Moved them inside my house, have them on heating pads and hopefully air temp will be enough. They like air temperature near 80. Usually only 68 inside the house so we will see. But it is warmer inside then I can get in the greenhouse this early. If they don’t sprout, I’ll just have to purchase plants in the spring.
