Average house irrigation at 20 gallons per minute for 2 hrs is 1200 gallons per session times 7 days is 8400 gallons per week. Many homes irrigate much more than 2 hrs per day. Multiply that times 100 homes in one subdivision, it’s very easy math to see the cumulative impact of green grass. Average water use for a family of 4 is 300-400 gallons per day. Most homes will use more water underground sprinkling in one session than the family will use of one week.
30 percent of Americans’ H20 consumption is outside. For most of us, that water is going straight to our grass - one quarter-acre lawn irrigated regularly can consume more than 13,000 gallons or more per week - more than six times the amount of water the average family of four uses weekly indoors.
By taking simple steps to reduce outdoor water use, you can ease pressure on our aquifers and public water treatment plant systems.
